Any official scorer experts out there?

Featured Replies

Here is the situation. Word for word from the Radio guy.

Bases loaded, 1 out

Batter pops up to SS who has it in his glove drops the ball, and bobbles it three times. However he is able to get the runner out at 2nd base the runner scores from 3rd.

Scored a fielders choice (which I understand) but the run is charged as earned.

Next batter flies out for the 3rd out.

Ok so why is it an earned run? In my opinion the scoring should have been Fielders choice for the batter reaching base but E-6 and an unearned run on the runner going from 3rd. My reasoning is because had the shortstop caught the pop up (out #2) and then the next batter flied out (3 outs)

can someone explain that too me?

Thanks in advance

Here is the truly strange thing:

Why didn't the umpires call the infield fly rule? With less than 2 outs the force play in effect, the runner shouldn't have even had to run to second. Out #2 (first out of the play) should have been called automatically.

unfortunately they dont have video at round rock so I will have to ask Dallas how deep it was but from what the radio guy said it wasnt very deep. He was able to get the out at 2nd.

The run is earned because the runner was already on base, if any runner scores after an error with 2 outs those are unearned, also the anyone who gets on via error and scores would be unearned.

It's not about deepness. If the infield can catch it with "regular effort", the infield fly rule is supposed to be called.

Fan, here is what I dont get about baseball. Had the SS made the routine play (radio guys words) or even picked the ball up cleanly after the drop (radio guy said he had time to turn a double play even after the drop) how can it be an earned run.

I understand you cant assume the double play. But the reality is if the infield fly rule is called or the SS makes the catch the runner is still standing on 3rd base with 2 outs. Then the very next batter flies out. Thus that run would have never scored.
