Posted May 3, 200916 yr This is actually the "through May 1st or 2nd" Round up, as I'm just pulling stats off the site. But you can suck it if you complain. NOLA SP/RP Koronka, 22 IP, 3.68 era, 1.41 whip (22 H, 9 BB), 19 K, 4 HR SP Sinkbiel, 21 IP, 10.29 era, 2.19 whip (38 H, 8 BB), 16 K, 4 HR SP Trahern 20.2 IP, 3.92 era, 1.50 whip, (24 H, 7 BB), 14 K, 0 HR RP Field 11.2 IP, .77 era, .77 whip (4 H, 5 BB, 12 K, 0 HR RP Wood 11.2 IP, .77 era, 1.29 whip (8 H, 7 BB), 0 HR RP Martinez 10 IP, 1.80 era, 1.20 whip (8 H, 4 BB), 9 K, 0 HR DL Tucker, Vanden Hurk, Tank MLB - Badenhop No major prospects here, but we have three pitchers on the 40 (Trahern, Martinez, Wood), our 2006 # 1 draft pick (Sinkbiel), and two career minor leaguers (Koronka, Field) who want to be the next Lee Gardner or Joe Nelson. Koronka is a lefty and could be next in line if Pinto/Meyer go down with an injury. He's not very good, as evident by his sub-optimal AAA whip and 4 bombs, so I would not expect much going forward. Trahern's whip is high, but he is also a decent ground ball pitcher so there is some optimism for him. Sinkbiel, looks like a lost cause. I have been asking for him to be moved to the pen for almost a full year now, and this only further supports my position. He's getting OK K's so he does have some raw stuff, but he is just not starter material. We have SP depth. Make the move Marlins. As for the last guys, Field has been bouncing around AAA for years like Nelson and has always had a decent arm. If anyone is going to surprise this year, it's going to be him. Wood and Martinez both have the stuff to be "3rd or 4th" RHP in the bullpen, but haven't really been tested. Wood had a big level jump this year. I could see all three of those guys getting time in the Marlins pen this year. I prefer all three over Badenhop. Also, the Marlins recently grabbed a lefty named Davidson off waivers. He is in AAA and hasn't thrown much. He 'could' also challenge Koronka for a lefty bullpen spot in the future, but he's apparently a hot mess of blazing fastballs all over the zone. Short answer - Trahern could be good one day (and we don't need to rush him as we can stash him in AAA 2009-2011), Field, Wood, and Martinez all have a little bit of potential for the pen. The best two arms here are on the DL with Tucker and Vanden Hurk. JAX SP West, 25.1 IP, 6.39 ERA, 1.66 whip (31 H, 11 BB), 33 K, 8 HR Yikes West, Yikes. I'm leaving him alone here as he is our unanimous # 1 SP prospect. But I mean, what the hell? 8 HR in 25 innings. Are you kidding me? You gave up 3, three, home runs last year in 100 innings in Jupiter. What gives? All of the HR are off right handers. Please DO NOT turn into a LOOGY. Even if you'd be really good at it right now (he's killing lefties despite the overall crappy line). We need you as a starter. Love the strikeouts, please continue that. But he is just serving up grapefruits, and missing the zone way to much. It's a respect to how awesome he can be that his ERA is only a "bad" 6.39 and not an atrocious number because of that many HR. That is eight. 8 HR in 25 innings. That is not a typo. So West, calm down. You are better than this. However, as a positive, I suspect this initial shelling will keep him in AA all year. He is clearly not ready even if he has wicked stuff, so hopefully the Marlins slow his development down, West realizes he cannot simply pump fastballs by people anymore, and he gets back on track. SP Thompson, 22 IP, 4.50 era, 1.45 whip (25 H, 7 BB), 14 K, 0 HR RP Leroux 9.2 IP, 9.31 era, 2.48 whip (19 H, 5 BB), 9 K, 0 HR DL Ceda MLB - Taylor Thompson is still very very young so there is time he improves, so hopefully this is a first month thing. He has the potential for 3-4 plus pitches, and is a lefty, so he is very important to the Marlins backend of the rotation/lefty reliever future. Leroux was added to the 40, and is pretty much the # 3 RP prospect we have right now (Tucker, Ceda, and I am not including potential SP converts). Again, hopefully this is just an early season thing. These three pitchers are all really important to us, as they all should be on our team by 2011. JUP SP Winters, 31 IP, .87 era, 1.00 whip (27 H, 4 BB), 15 K, 0 HR SP Allison, 21.2 IP, 1.25 era, .92 whp (15 H, 5 BB), 16 K, 0 HR SP Sanabia, 20.2 IP, 2.18 era, 1.06 whip (17 H, 5 BB), 19 K, 2 HR SP Villanueva, 26.2 IP, 3.04 era, 1.28 whip (31 H, 3 BB), 19 K, 1 HR RP Harvey, 12 IP, 2.25 era, 1.08 whip (9 H, 4 BB), 13 K, 0 HR RP Cischek, 10.2 IP, 1.69 era, 1.22 whip, (8 H, 5 BB), 10 K, 0 HR FINALLY. A POSITIVE IN OUR FARM SYSTEM. It is still only A+, and Winters and Allison have no business being there and should be in AA, but at least they are doing what they should be doing. Dominating. It's hard to argue whose the best prospect here. Winters has been on a solid development path, gets a lot of ground balls, and does his thing quietly. He doesn't really project to be a killer once he gets up to the AAA/MLB level, maybe a 4/5th SP potential or a real good swingman, but some people still have hope for him being a 3/4 (the same can be said for Trahern). I like to think of him as a future "4" if everything goes right. And so far it is. Allison, if his arm velocity is back (reports are lacking here), he may see an immense rise in prospect status. Assuming his velocity is still at last year's levels though, Allison is still a huge work in progress and hopefully he can handle AA when the promotion comes soon. He is a flyball pitcher, unlike Winters, so there may be shellings in the future, but he probably has the secondary stuff to turn himself into a back rotation starter/swingman just like Winters if everything works out. And really, it's nice to have those guys around if we can develop a few. Now Sanabia, this kid throws fire. He has the real upside of the group if everything goes right, but he's probably also the most volatile as he doesn't shown the same consistency of a guy like Winters. Hopefully in the pitchers park in Jupiter, this is a break out year and he cracks into our top 10-15 prospects overall this offseason. If not much higher. Villanueva, isn't much of a prospect. This is a future reliever even if he is having some success starting now, but he had a nice month too so he'll get a mention. I still wouldn't put him anywhere close to our top 15-20 arms in the minors. And a quick mention, Harvey is a great story as he is coming off a failed hitting prospect career so hopefully he transitions well. Those numbers are encouraging. Cischek is kind of cool, and could turn himself into a Leroux kind of prospect if he keeps it up. I'd say an above average arm, but nothing to get excited about yet. Hopefully he keeps it up. Short answer - Winters and Allison need to go to AA immediately and hopefully they keep it up, Sanabia is one to keep a serious watch on, keep an eye on the rest in case they keep it up. GBO SP Kaminska, 21 IP, 4.71 era, 1.29 whip (18 H, 9 BB), 21 K, 2 HR SP Hand, 14 IP, 12.86 era, 2.71 whip (22 H, 16 BB), 17 K, 3 HR SP Dorn, 29 IP, 2.79 era, 1.24 whip (30 H, 6 BB), 20 K, 2 HR RP Andrelczyk 13.1 IP, .68 era, .83 whip (9 H, 2 BB), 23 K, 0 HR Short Season and not up - Olmos, Brewer Kaminska is kind of like Sanabia. Huge live arm, just needs to harness it. Really volatile pitching prospect, but I like having at least 1 guy like this at every level and it's the nice the Marlins seemingly 'hit' on one of these guys late in every draft to offer us some hope in developing something out of nothing. Hand was our 2nd round pick last year, and as you can see, he's getting shelled. He's very young and should probably go join Brewer and Olmos in short season. No need to destroy this guys confidence. They are all 18. Work them slowly. Dorn is not much of a prospect, but he had a nice month. He's a typical college guy that dominates low A, and then gets shelled as he moves up. But you never know. You get a Graham Taylor every now and then. Now Andrelczyk, is retarded right now. He needs to move up to Jupiter if he has another month like this. It's hard to project RP arms in low A, but that is just a stupid 13 innings. Short answer - Keep an eye on Kaminska and Andrelczyk and maybe they pitch themselves into top 20 overall prospect relevancy, hopefully we don't see much of Hand, Olmos, and Brewer and the Marlins work with them in short season/Jamestown.
May 4, 200916 yr Great round-up, hopefully there will be some good news as far as the starter prospects are concerned.
May 4, 200916 yr FWIW, 7 of West's 8 home runs allowed were given up in 2 games. His last outing he gave up 4 in just 3 innings of work... ouch. Still no consistency. Look at his outings: Poor, great, great, poor, poor. And yeah the 33-11 K/BB numbers are an improvement at least. I have yet to see him reach the mid-90s that I read his fastball can supposedly top out at.

This is the classic, he needs to learn how to pitch not throw, development wall.
