Royals DFA Ron Mahay

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 24 at 3:51pm CST]The Royals designated Ron Mahay for assignment to make room for Yasuhiko Yabuta, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.Mahay, a 38-year-old lefty, has allowed 55 hits and 19 walks in 41.1innings, striking out 34. The 13-year veteran has allowed nine homersalready, which have contributed to his 4.79 ERA. Mahay's in the secondyear of a two-year $8MM deal that he signed before the 2008 season.

It appears as if they were using him in a middle-relief role, and he had his difficulties. He has a career .705 OPS-against against LHB. I think this team could really use a LOOGY, and he could fit that description nicely. Not to mention he won't kill rosters when they expand September 1st. I guess the difficulty would be who to remove from the 40-man? It seems there are maybe a couple of options there (Trahern to 60-day DL?)

Not really a LOOGY. 1.34 WHIP this season, 1.29 WHIP in his career, 4.36 FIP in his career against LHP.

Getting him wouldn't make us worse but it also wouldn't really make us better.

We'll also probably have Andrew in the pen come September so the another lefty argument doesn't hold that much ground.
