If we don't offer arbitration I'd be really disappointed.

 

I mean, with how much interest there is in him, what's a worse case scenario? We trade him? With how much play time he's had he's not going to get any more in arbitration than he would on the market, this isn't a Carlos Delgado situation. I'd actually imagine most teams would prefer to go to arbitration with him, since it would only be one year.

Arbitration so we get a sandwich pick in next year draft, I mean.

 

If we don't offer arbitration, we don't get a pick. If we offer arbitration and he declines, we got a pick in between the first and second round. If we offer arbitration and he accepts, we get no pick.

As Nny said, service time is really against him. Out of a possible 648 games, he's only played 449 since joining the Nats in '05. Now most of those games were pretty good including the 133 he played this year while hitting .291 but that will only get you so far.

 

I could see him garnering somewhere between $2 and $3 mil in arbi. And for that, we should at least offer.

I would trade JJ to Texas for two excellent pitching prospects and outfielder Nelson Cruz (minimum wage). Cruz would replace Coghlan in left while the latter moves to second base. His bat would replace Uggla's power and he has speed on the bases. Stanton would then replace Ross after this season when Ross gets too spendy. Texas reportedly has some good young pitching. (I know that this is a Nick Johnson thread but that's too boring).
