Florida Panthers get the 3rd pick

Yeah, unfortunate that we missed the top 2 picks, especially considering last year had 3 top picks.

But then of course that's karma for you... cant trade away the lottery pick 3 times in less than half a decade and expect to get it agin... 4 times in 11 years would be unheard of considering we would have won the lottery 4 times and never finished worse than 27 (3rd last).

we've been very fortunate in the lotto, and quite frankly Im sure there'd be a lot of people complaining had we won the lotto anyways.

I'm just hoping that whoever we take it's

a: not a defenseman (even thought the Panthers badly need a defensive overhall)

and

b: a steal

Two names that immediately come to mind are Connolly and Tarasenko. Also, if Kiril Kabonov is able to fall to the 2nd round, considering we have 3 picks I believe this year, I'd be more than happy to take a gamble on him.

This is pretty much the scouting reports for top picks.

1. Hall LW

2. Seguin C

3. Grudbranson D

4. Fowler D

5. Conolly RW

6. forgot the dudes name D

7. Tarasenko RW

The next best available players are defensemen and they are a significant drop off for stardom. This is not to say you wont get one, it's just that whoever they draft is certainly not projected to be a star, does not absolutely dominate the league they are in at the moment, and will have to spend time in the minor leagues developing (something the Panthers suck at).

Furthermore, the Panthers would need to stay away from higher talent picks in order to take the next best offensive player, an issue they need to address.

Of course they need defense too, but a key point is while a top 5 pick for offense usually takes no more than 3 years to begin their NHL career and start putting up numbers, it takes a defenseman 3 years to crack an NHL roster and a good 4 or 5 years to really blossom and adjust to the NHL level.

That's just a general rule of thumb though... not necessarily truth for every player.

Unfortunately unlike previous years where stardom is more evident in the top 3 or even 4 guys, this year it's really between 2 guys. I doubt whoever the Panthers take will be on our roster next season and that's the real disappointment IMO.

But then again maybe they will spend this year. Just maybe.

I'm guessing you're thinking about Gormley for #6.

Yeah, there ya go. Just made that a quick list off the top of my head mist Nino whatever his name is (who I know absolutely nothing about) and Gormley. And I spelled Gudbranson wrong ;)

None the less other than Gudbranson and Fowler, picks 5-9 are all a tossup and it really isnt significant who goes when. But if the Panthers want an offensive player they are going to have to pick out of position... which really isn't good. I hope they try to swap picks with Boston and take Seguin even though we really dont need a playmaking center...

If there's no intent in drafting a D man, I hope we trade down a few spots & maybe add another pick that we can move for a player later on, or something. There's going to be moves, either way. I highly doubt Sexton will keep all 3 2nd rounders.

Gudbranson seems like a good, safe choice. He's a shutdown physical guy with offensive ability too...a Kulikov-Gudbranson pairing could make for a future 1st D pair for a long time.

I'm pretty sure the organization is going to go with a forward though, so I expect them to draft Connolly.

ideally using our top 2nd round pick to move into Boston's position would be possible, although it's solely up to Boston. If they cant get Boston's pick Im highly against moving our pick and I'd rather see us acquring another pick instead. Keep #3, take Gudbranson or Fowler with it (Im in no executive position to distinguish between the two but then again who on the Panthers is I would rather draft size in that situation), and then get someone 5-9 to cough up a pick. If we can get Conolly great, if not Tarasenko is another speedy forward that could be valuable in the future.
