November 19, 200322 yr When the Phillies and Astros finally got down to serious name-swapping in the Billy Wagner deal, the Phillies originally had four prospects they wouldn't discuss: first baseman Ryan Howard and their three best pitching prospects -- Cole Hamels, Gavin Floyd and Taylor Buchholz. They then removed Buchholz from the untouchables list when it became clear that if they didn't, the Astros were packing up their closer and keeping him. What puzzled some clubs was the Phillies' unwillingness to deal Howard, who nearly won the Florida State League triple crown but is blocked by Jim Thome. Now, however, other teams that have talked with the Phillies say they believe the club was saving Howard as its key chip in another deal -- whether that be Javier Vazquez, Brad Penny or some other starting pitcher that gets salary-dumped this winter.
November 19, 200322 yr I have heard this Penny for Howard deal rumored. Howard is a lefty with sick offensive numbers. I just dont see why we need him at this point - we have Stokes and even Willingham who could play 1B. Sure, Howard has big ability, but we dont want to get heavy with 1B prospects and thin with pitching - that can start right now. Also, I am very very hesitant to trade intra-division. Penny is going to be a good one IF he can put it all together. The World Series gave me hope of that. I say stick with Penny.

I guess this means Redman isn't getting much attention from other ballclubs. If this move keeps us from having to unload Lowell I'm fine with it. Keep in mind Willingham is extremely versatile and can play 3B, 1B, C, and LF.
