Wednesday, November 26, 2003 Potential donors will be screened ESPN.com news services Alonzo Mourning has retired from basketball. But evidently he made a few friends along the way. The New York Times is reporting that dozens of people have offered to donate their kidneys to Mourning after the announcement on Monday that the Nets center needed a transplant due to his battle with focal glomerulosclerosis. "From Texas, California, Seattle, Florida, Detroit and parts of New England, people have been calling to say: 'How do I get tested? I'd like to help,'" Gregory Perrin, the director of marketing and development for the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America, told the Times. "A number of them are saying: 'I'm a Zo fan. I love the way he played basketball.' Some are actually saying: 'I'm a Knicks fan, but I admire what he did in going public with this. I'd like to help.'" Perrin told the Times that roughly 30 people had expressed an interest. Others called the Nets or tried to contact Mourning's doctor, Gerald Appel. The Times reported that all potential donors will be screened and will need to be a physical match with Mourning, whose blood type is 0. Elaine Berg, president and chief executive of the New York Organ Donor Network, said any potential donors wishing to make money off Mourning will be ruled out. Berg also expressed uneasiness that Mourning's condition created such an outcry for donations solely for his use while others must stay on a waiting list. "It's not fair," she told the Times, "but the reality is, if people want to give specifically to Alonzo or to nobody at all, why not save Alonzo?" But Perrin said many callers indicated they would donate their kidney for anyone's use. pretty baller if you ask me. he's even a type O.
November 26, 200322 yr Author i guess... a black male with type O blood would probably die before he ever gets called off of the waiting list. but then again, if you have people who wouldn't normally donate kidneys but are willing to give one to zo, i don't think it's a problem. it sounds bad to say it, but he probably deserves a kidney more than most people. in his lifetime, he'll probably donate more to charity than 1000 average americans would.
November 26, 200322 yr yeah, let 1000 children die, good idea , let Zo skip all those kids and give him his kidney...dont get me wrong im glad he's going to survive, i just dont think its fair for all those people that have been waiting for a long a** time
November 26, 200322 yr it is unfair but... like alkazoid said though, would you rather have nobody saved or at least alonzo saved?? I mean, yeah that's kinda unfair of people to say "no, i don't wanna give up my kidney unless it goes to Zo" but that's not even the case because it says on the bottom of the article that many callers said they would donate a kidney for anyones use.
November 27, 200322 yr yeah, let 1000 children die, good idea , let Zo skip all those kids and give him his kidney...dont get me wrong im glad he's going to survive, i just dont think its fair for all those people that have been waiting for a long a** time Yeah, but you have to think about all the money Zo has donated over his life time. and after he found out about his kidney he donated lots of money to for research etc on his deseise. Hes a good guy and deserves to live on.
