November 29, 200322 yr Schilling traded to the Red Sux makes me think of one thing: Steinbrenner's big wallet. Does this mean now that FA's everywhere will start clamoring for NYC in order to get a big contract - or perhaps drive up the prices of their peers'? It seems so, at least in my mind. Red Sux and Yanks offseasons are comparable to the US - USSR Cold War years. It isnt how they perform so much as who they get that is important in most cases. Schilling is going to cause the Yankees to counter - which could drive up prices for FA's like Castillo (whom, as far as I know, has not been contacted by the Yanks but by the Mutts) and even Vlad (whom some think we are in the running for and I would stress he wont sign with NY but will probably use them to price his contract). Also, Colon may be a target as well as Vazquez but that could help us in the value assigned to a guy like Redman - who we may be looking to trade to free up money. What do you guys think?
November 29, 200322 yr i dont think this affects any player on the Marlin currently(including free agents)
November 29, 200322 yr i dont think this affects any player on the Marlin currently(including free agents) I agree- I think this has little effect on the Marlins.
November 29, 200322 yr There may be an indirect effect on us via the market, but I doubt it. I don't think this is a blockbuster contract by any means. It is a 3 years (average 13 million a year), which it is IMO well spent money for a large market franchise like Boston.
November 29, 200322 yr Author 3 @ $13M per is very good. But I seriously doubt that the Boss will stand pat - there are going to be some ramifications. It may not effect us directly, but it will effect the market and should effect us in some way.
November 29, 200322 yr This will only affect the Marlins if they go to the WS next year. A Pedro-Curt 1-2 punch (with the Red Sox' lineup) would be unbeatable.
November 29, 200322 yr The biggest impact of Shilling to Boston is that he didn't wind up back in Philadelphia who coveted him but couldn't package an acceptable deal.

November 29, 200322 yr It could actually help us. Think about it, The Yanks need to make a big move to match the Red Sox so they could either take Millwood from Philly or trade for Javi Vazquez from Montreal.Or if they get desperate they could go after that Maddux guy...

Exactly. That is what I am looking for from you guys... This deal IS going to have an impact on us - indirectly.

Sheff to the Yanks = one less headache on the division.

Baseball makes perfect sense, unless you're Dusty Baker or Grady Little.
