November 30, 200322 yr I have failed miserably trying to get a handle on what Adam Katz, Jose Guillen's agent, is looking to get for his guy in 2004 and beyond. Ramp (I think it was Ramp) was really big on the guy and so I decided to try and learn more about him, believing the Marlins biggest concern in 2004 is run production. So, the question is - what kind of $$$ is Guillen looking for as a free agent? Rather than taking wild a$$ guesses, links to stories on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
December 1, 200322 yr after the arbitration hearings and non-tenders happen, no one will have a clear idea. if i'm a GM looking to sign him, i'd say nothing more than $2.4 million with incentives. he may get anywhere from $1,000,000 to $4,000,000+. hard to tell right now.
December 1, 200322 yr Guillen was a stud for the Reds this year, easily our most productive player. He came back down to earth a bit in Oakland, but he was also playing with a broken hand. I can't find the article, but I remember reading that Guillen's agent was looking for $5-6 million a year for a 3-4 year deal. I have to believe that Guillen will sign for about half that.
December 1, 200322 yr A bit more on Guillen. He gained a reputation in Cincinnati among the fans for throwing a few tantrums in the clubhouse. This was at a time when he was the most productive player in the offense, and Bob Boone refused to start him. I think it was more desire to play than anything. Guillen is still relatively young. He has worked hard on improving his swing and his patience at the plate. Whoever signs him shouldn't be disappointed in what they get. He has that unique combination of speed and power, similar to a young OF #25 or Eric Davis. He provided the only offensive punch in more than one Reds victory this season.
December 2, 200322 yr Gullen only played the last 2 weeks of the season with a broken hand, and actually, did better those 2 weeks then any other time in Oakland. in Oakland, he fell back to all his career averages except for SLG, which was above 460 (career 415 i think). though in the playoffs he showed amazing plate discipline compared to the rest of the year. however, i read something where one of the A's september call-ups said he doesn't think Guillen will get a contract from Beane, and can understand why he's been on so many different ball clubs.
December 2, 200322 yr Cincci is coors field two. Heck, look how it made aaron boone look like a good player when he is obviously not (I miss Claussen.) Guillen has improved and he has quite an arm, so a team like the rockies can sign him for three million instead of getting washed up Raul Mondesi.

I can't give his exact NL road split, but he did hit 13 home runs on the road and he was hitting .337 when he got traded, so his average was higher on the road too.

December 3, 200322 yr but he did OPS 871 in September. problem is, no way of telling if that's the real Boone, throw on top of that his streakiness and you really don't know what to make of him. 2004 will be the decider on wheather Boone is Excellent, Good, Average, Poor, or Terrible. right now, i'd have to say Good.

Honestly I would say Boone is offensively poor (bad ops outside of GAB), but defensively good. However, his horrible 3rd base instincts cost us world series games (like the play he threw to first instead of home.) Ventura was a better 3rd baseman, had a way better barehand play, and better instincts. We're stupid, so we will probably not sign him to a back up. Boone w/ enrique? Yikes!
