i always liked Frank. it didn't sink in to me that he was getting a Ring until i saw him on the field celebrating after the game. i think he's a HOFer given his career numbers and spending a decade being the best offensive first basemen in the AL (possibly the majors). but given the similarity of the numbers, if Thomas is a HOFer, than Bagwell is too. :o
  3. what is the best park and league for hitters in the minor leagues? i know for AAA the Pacific Coast League is very hitter friendly, and Colorado Springs is the most extreme hitters park at that level. does anyone know what they are for AA, High A, and Low A?
  4. yep, it be a Yahoo league.
  5. need 10 more people...c'mon, join, what have ya got to lose?
  6. draft time changed to 8:00 PM EST...this was done because the core group of people i started the league for live on the West Coast and couldn't make the original draft time.
  7. i already has tremendous respect for Smoltz, but this gives me just that much more. :thumbup

  13. reasons why: 1. Opening Day 2. about 30-50% of the crowd will be Cubs fans 3. Junior, Kearns, and Dunn healthy 4. baseball lifers 5. Acevedo, Wagner, Claussen and other young pitchers. take it from the guy who lives in Greater Cincinnati and is a Reds and Cubs fan, and who's fiance is a Cubs fan. it's mostly because of the Cubs.

  15. Wood, Prior prepare for '04 season Fans hope to see duo toil in Windy City for years By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com CHICAGO -- They are the Chicago Cubs' dynamic duo, the team's 1-2 punch, and they share more than the same glove size and childhood heroes. Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are the Cubs' pair of aces and the two pitchers are gearing up for the 2004 season. Both have started throwing. Both are doing their cardio work, although Wood's sessions include riding around the Phoenix area on a mountain bike. When pitchers and catchers report to Mesa, Ariz., on Feb. 17, both expect to be ready. Cubs fans hope the two will be together for a long time. Wood took a first step toward that when he signed a one-year, $9.75 million contract Jan. 16. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry and Wood both said they want to finalize a multi-year deal before Spring Training begins. It was good to see Wood smiling during the Cubs Convention. The last image of the right-hander from the 2003 season was after the team lost Game 7 of the National League Championship Series to the Florida Marlins. Wood was upset at his performance in the game, and blamed himself, saying he "choked." And now? "Once I got home I was fine," Wood said. "I'm never going to forget it. But I'm not going to dwell on it. That's part of the game. I didn't succeed that day, but I moved on. I don't regret saying [i choked]. I was surrounded at my locker 20 minutes after we'd just gotten kicked out of the playoffs, and that's the way I felt at the time." Does he still feel that way? "To a certain degree," Wood said. "I didn't do my job that day. If you want to call it choking or just not doing your job. ... But I realize we brought a lot of special memories and a lot of special moments to a lot of people." One moment he and Prior shared was Game 5 of the NL Division Series. The deciding game was played in Atlanta, and Wood was starting. But he was missing something. "I remembered my belt and my hat -- I just forgot my glove," Wood said. He ended up borrowing Prior's, saying he wanted "one with a lot of strikes in it." The Cubs won the game, 5-1, and took the five-game series against the Braves. "I felt a part of that game because my glove was in use," Prior said. During a question and answer session at the convention, Wood and Prior were asked about whether they collect any souvenirs. Both admitted to saving jerseys and balls but Wood said his prize possession is a baseball autographed by rocker Ozzy Osborne who sang during the seventh inning stretch last summer at Wrigley Field. "It looks like he signed it with his feet," Wood said. "The best thing for me is I got my glove back from Game 5," Prior said. Wood was asked about his tendency to throw inside. He led the league in 2003, hitting 21 batters, the most by a pitcher since 1969. "I don't really care," Wood said. "You're going to hit guys." Not Prior. "Any time I've ever tried to hit somebody ... I've missed," Prior said. The crowd seemed to disagree and yelled out Barry Bonds' name, recalling the May 1 game when Prior plunked the San Francisco slugger. But Prior said he wasn't aiming despite what the Giants outfielder might think. The plan was to throw hard in and soft away, and one pitch just got away. "You say, 'Don't hit him' and your mind doesn't register the 'don't' part sometimes," Prior said. Both pitchers denied that the Cubs are cursed. The players even joked about bringing a goat into the dugout during the playoffs to end the local legend. "I don't think any one goat has that power," Wood said. And both agreed that Cubs manager Dusty Baker is a key reason the team won its first National League Central Division title. "I don't know if you can describe what it's like to play for Dusty," Wood said. "All I know is I will play until my arm falls off for that man." Carrie Muskat is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to approval by Major League Baseball or its clubs.
  16. i really do sympathize with those poor Canadian sepratists, they have a good cause... FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!!!!!!
  17. he had shoulder surgery. and supposedly TJ surgery doesn't make you throw faster, it gets rid of throwing pain so you do throw faster. same thing. it makes you throw faster.
  18. the war was already won by the time those things were dropped. there was no need for them other than to justify the money wasted to develop them. that may be the most ignorant thing i've ever heard. they were dropped to save Japan. the entire country was prepared to fight to the death. the mass belief among Japan was Bushido, and in it, they would rather die than surrender. the only reason the surrender was as peacable as it was is because of a radio broadcast by the Emporer (who effectively ordered the surrender despite having no real power). it was the first time in the history of Japan that the voice of the Emporer had ever been heard (because the prevailing thought was that he was a living god on earth) when he made his radio announcment that Japan was surrendering, he urged the people to not resist the Americans. you ever wonder why after the surrender there was almost no underground resistance? because the Emporer (god of Japan) had spoken. the only reason why the Emporer wanted the surrender to happen when it did was because of the terrible destructive power of the atomic bomb.
  19. Great Civilizations pt. 1 of 5; "The Celts" ?The Celts? Proud and ancient are the Celts. Here is their world and their culture. They and their history date back to the earliest times in human history. The lands of poets and heros and kings. Their's are the lands of mists and mystery, of heros and maidens, and of Arthur the King. They are varied, yet share a common bond; they are different, yet they are alike; they are separate, yet they are one. For they are indeed, the lands of dreams and legends. From the mists of the highlands, to the emerald isle, to the rocky coasts of Wales and Cornwall, here then are the Celts and their world. As a famous saying goes, "Before man, there was time. Before time, there were Celts." The Celts were a varied people, unified only in the basics of their religion and language. Celtic culture between Scotland, Britain, Ireland, Mann, Iberia, and the Rhine Valley was vastly different. This brief look into Celtic culture will just account for generalizations for the sake of conserving space. Among ancient European peoples were the Celts--muscular, red-haired wanderers who probably came from the distant steppes beyond the Caspian Sea. By 500 BC they were living in northeastern France, southwestern Germany, and Bohemia. The Celts, continued to migrate in all directions. In Asia Minor they founded the kingdom of Galatia. St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians in the New Testament is addressed to the descendants of these Celts. In Britain, Celtic warriors overran and conquered the islands. The Celts were pushed out of their lands with the conquering Legions of Rome, and eventually assimilated into Roman society. The last two strongholds of the Celts (Scotland and Wales) were never conquered by Rome. The Scotch and Manx Celts forced the building of Hadrian?s Wall in effort to prevent the constant raiding of northern Roman settlements. Hadrian never conquered the Welsh Celts for unknown reasons, some scholars believe that it may have been out of curiosity of these people. Others conclude that the Emperors of Rome did not believe expanding into Wales was worth the costs. The Celts of Man and Scotland would eventually turn into the Picts, than the Scots through an odd mixture of pre-Viking Norse settlement and small groups of Britains and Romans migrating north. It was eventually Viking Age Norseman that would ultimately bring about the change from Pictish culture to that of modern Scotland. The Welsh Celts survived in Wales until the Anglo-Saxon invasions, in which they eventually fled to Ireland. The Celtic culture never entirely disappeared from Ireland, and in the 1800?s, the Celtic Renaissance hit in Ireland. The revival was especially strong in Ireland, where it led to the writing of plays with Irish-Celtic themes. Erse, or Irish Gaelic, is now an official language of Ireland. Religion It?s nearly 4am here now, so I?m just going to copy and paste this from Compton?s Home Encyclopedia: The Celts were organized loosely in tribes. Each tribe had a chief, nobles, freemen, and slaves. Usually it lived in a fortified village, often built on a hilltop, with fields and pastures outside. The tribes often fought each other. If one tribe conquered several others, its chief took the title of king.? The Celts brought many new skills to the peoples they conquered. They knew how to smelt iron and forge it into useful implements. They decorated their helmets, shields, and arms with artistic metalwork and enameling. The Celts were also adept in such practical matters as curing hams, keeping bees, and making wooden barrels.? Celtic priests were called druids, and their religion, druidism. Little is known of the druids because their rites were never written down. Apparently their gods were similar to those of other early peoples. The druids of Gaul were both judges and priests who sacrificed criminals to their gods. The druids of Britain were chiefly religious teachers.? Only men of good family could become druids. Membership was highly prized because druids did not have to fight or pay taxes. The druids taught that the soul was immortal, passing after death from one person to another. They deemed the mistletoe sacred, especially if grown on an oak tree. The oak was also sacred, and druids often held their rites in an oak forest. Wise in the lore of plants, animals, and stars, the druids were also magicians and astrologers. Many ancient stone monuments were once thought to have been built by druids, but scientists now date them from pre-Celtic times. Contributions The Celtic contributions to the world include Stone Henge, Beowulf, and King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The prose poem and the ballad are also contributions from Celtic society. Any society that started that long ago, contributed what it has, and still survives (sort of) today deserves to be called on of the greatest civilizations in history. Tomorrow: Carthage
  20. Brown might be throeing harder because of the Tommy John surgery. it's not unheard of to throw 2-4 MPH faster after TJ. it's been reported that some high school pitchers get it done wheather it's needed or not for the sake of throwing harder.

  23. my Dad smokes, my Mom used to. i don't smoke, though i have tried it, and was greatly dissapointed. my logic was 'for people to try this, it's got to do something.' it didn't do anything that controlled breathing won't already do. my question is, what first possessed humanity to take a plant, set it on fire, and put it in their mouth?
