You don't understand the Marlins situation. The lease a football stadium that is magically turned into a baseball diamond overnight on unfavorable terms and they really need the roof which cannot be done at PPS because the owner (Miami Dolphins) won't put the money because it doesn't rain down here during the winter.

How much rainouts do you have? I remember there being quite a few marlins game this summer :lol

I am a conservative, and I don't like the idea of buying stadiums for private teams, but if there is one team that REALLY needs it, the Marlins are it.

 

The nice thing is that taxpayers would be repayed by the Marlins through rent payments and revenues. It is like a loan which the Marlins pay off and maintain, but the taxpayers own the property.

so 20 years from now they leave the stadium, and in the long run the whole deal wasn't worth it? Its not like the marlins don't have a stadium or if the rain problem is truly that bad.

 

this is not worth debating though, we all know you guys will have fancy new seats to sit in soon enough.

They wouldn't be able to leave until 2037, and UM can use it for baseball. One or two all star games would make it worth the cost alone. We found that out with the NHL All Star game in Sunrise with the ODC.

BTW, all the local media polls except the Herald's show approval as long as they don't raise taxes on residents, take money away from social/education projects, and doesn't interfere with other non-tourism facilities projects. The Marlins have made it clear that all these requirements would be met and that if a bond issue or sales tax were needed, voters would have to approve it according to state law.

 

If the City of St. Pete can issue $200 million in bonds by itself to build Tropicana Field, why can't the county, city, state, Marlins, and private investors not be able to come up with $315+ million needed to do this?

Petersburg wasted their money! I believe it is all a waste of money. Field a good team and the fans will come. Yankee stadium is horrible. The sound sucks, the view is bad, the seats are expensive...yet we still come. We don't need a new stadium, and unless the stadium is antiquated and dangerous like in Detroit, I don't think its a good idea to fund another.

This poll after all comes from the Miami Herald and St. Pete Times. Those two papers are about as reliable as toilet paper.

Jeffrey Loria has to pay a huge amount of money to play in Pro Player. I'm not sure how much, but I can tell you it's more than the Marlins need.

 

If the Marlins get a new stadium, that cost drastically lowers millions leaving the Marlins with more money to spend on players. With more money to spend on players, they can buy top notch FA. That attracts what people call "Fairweather" fans leading to them buying season tickets, giving more money to Loria to spend.

St. Pete didn't waste their money. They built the dome to get a baseball team. Because of it they were able to get an NCAA Final Four, keep and revive a struggling hockey team in the Tampa Bay market, and get many other events.

 

The Dome, as much as it is made fun of, is a good facility for baseball and has nice sight lines, is bright, and comfortable.

 

PPS is not comfortable for baseball at all. It is not near the population center but inbetween them. It is a great location for football, but too far away for 50-75% of all the people in the area. Traffic is bad in the area and mass transit is non-existant in that area of town.

 

The economics at PPS would never work because it is a football stadium and the ballpark needs to be built. If it wasn't needed, then it wouldn't have had money pledged for it already.

I'm not sure how it goes, but I think the City would still own the stadium. Yet, with the Marlins at Pro Player, along with Huzeinga's high rental fee, he has a monopoly on the food. The Marlins don't make any money on food. The New Stadium would give the Marlins a low rental fee because it helps the local economy giving the city more money through taxes.

I agree with everything you said, except the traffic. I've been to many stadiums, and compared to those stadiums it isn't terrible. Go to the Dome in Tampa and they have it smooth flowing. Nice downtown area too.

We have been through this before and everyone agrees down here that a new stadium is the only answer. the problem is that some claim the money isn't there for the Marlins, yet in this time two brand new arenas costing more combined than the ballpark would have been built and a perfectly good arena is laying almost unused in Downtown Miami.

5,000 jobs at mininum wage isn't exactly worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

 

It is pretty much corperate welfare. How can people be against giving single mothers money, but rich guys millions of dollars.

 

I have a good idea, give people nothing unless one can assess money is truly saved (like putting money in head start lowers incarceration rates, which saves money.)

 

People stopped going to marlins games because they never had .500 seasons (unless they happened to win the world series that year!). The argument presented is that a seperate stadium saves the marlins owner money, and he will buy better FAs, field a better team, and make more money and the process repeats. You know what, I'm not crying for this millionaire. The oakland as have a smaller payroll and they are doing fine. The marlins have won 20% of the world series in the last 10 years with the "economic difficulties brought upon by pro player." Boo hoo. I'm not crying for this millionaire. I guarentee you the marlins if their young pitching doesn't pull a 85 Royals will have way better attendence. The new stadium is not needed. The profits made by next season by that logic should help the marlins reinvest, field a better team, and repeat that cycle of building up the team with no cost to the tax payer. The stadium is not the problem. Wrigley, Yankee, Fenway, and Shea stadiums/parks all have good attendence, the stadium has nothing to do with people going to see games.

No, I live in NY, where else would I live? I'm a human, please restrain from using foul language because of the team I like, have some respect.

grounds crew, chefs, maintenence work, technicial people, and many others are immigrant labor (at least in NY) who are lucky to be pulling in minimal wage.

 

And those jobs still don't add up to hundreds of millions of dollars...and those same jobs exist at pro-players.

here they are all local jobs. migrant workers are for the farms. the jobs would not exist because they are paid per event, not on salary or per hour.

 

many people would be out of work during the summer.
