My 2004 Marlins Payroll Estimates

I've ammended my numbers based on last night's signings, etc.

I'm now at roughly $55 million which says to me Admin has some money to work with. I've reduced Cabs and Willis from an estimated $1,000,000 each to $500k each, so even if I'm wrong that the Fish do something for each player over and above the MLB Basic Agreement, which I believe they will, the difference is only a couple of hundred thousand dollars.

I believe both Penny and Pavano will win their arbitration cases although theMarlins may sign both before the next arb deadline. Penny is due the biggest increase.

I updated AGon's salary to $3.1 which may or maybe not be accurate because at this point only know its $6.2 for two years and we don;t know the terms.

Look under AGon...

Marlins agreed to terms with shortstop Alex Gonzalez on a two-year, $6.2 million contract.

Gonzalez will earn $2.8 million next season and $3.4 million in 2005. That's an awful lot to pay for someone who has been a decent hitter for about two months of the last four years, but he probably would have done at least as well had the team tried to go to arbitration with him.

Using liberal 3 million projections for both Penny and Pavano; a raise to 2.3 for Beckett; modest increases to 400K to Choi, Cabrera, etc.; and deferrals I'm only up to somewhere between 51.19 to 53.765 million.

Vlad at 12M per year puts us at 65M.

A backup outfielder, lefty reliever and catcher (Castro's trial is January and there will be a few catchers still out there) would put the club just short of 60M.

Generally we agree and I suspect the differences are $250k between Penny/Pavano, a $1.50 million bench player I inserted and a few bucks between Cabs and Willis. Until told otherwise Spooney needs to be accounted for. I'll be glad to edit my numbers if he's cut loose.

Spooney will be on the team. he has too much talent to be released.

Accounted for Spooney.

BTW, this is a pretty good thread to share info, eh?

hey Marlins2003, you are missing Lenny Harris on your bench

I didn't list him by name because I'm not sure he'll make the team.

You'll notice I left three bench positions open because its along way to opening day and I figure The Fish will look at alot of guys to fill those roster spots during spriing training. I know he's signed but at his level of compensation the Fish will replace him in a heartbeat of better talent is available or someone plays themselves into a job.

I've ammended my numbers based on last night's signings, etc.

A couple of corrections:

Castillo is $4M next year, his $2M bonus is deferred until the end of the contract

Gonzo is $2.8M next year, $3.4M in 2005

Pierre is $2.3M next year

Tejera may be $.45M (conflicting reports)

Several arbys and a few fill ins left to verify.

My best guess is we will be at $52M once another RP and two bench additions are made....unless we get a big name FA.

castillo's signing bonus is not due at the "end" of his contract, it's due at some time "during" his contract period and therefore has to be accrued for. If y'all want to use a nonaccrual number I can do that but I believe it's wrong to do so.

Pierre makes $2,000,000 next year and 2.3 in 2005

"NEW YORK (AP) -- How Mike Hampton's eight-year, $121 million contract is affected by Monday's trades, as obtained by The Associated Press from player and management sources.

Colorado declined Hampton's 2009 option and traded Hampton, outfielder Juan Pierre and $6.5 million ($2 million in 2003, $2 million in 2004 and $2.5 million) to the Florida Marlins for catcher Charles Johnson..."

Juan Pierre OF FLA Signed Mar 2002 - 4 years/$7.5M

2002: $0.5M (+$0.4M signing bonus)

2003: $0.9M

2004: $2.3M

2005: $3.4M

-Total value of deal can reach $12.75M with incentives
