January 16, 200422 yr Author ahh I see. Not like it matters because it looks like Pudge will be a Tiger soon. Atleast he's not going to the flubs.

My understanding of the MLB/MLPA Basic Agreement is that he may neither practice with nor be in contact for purposes of negotiations with the team. If anyone wants to look it up its {Art. XX (B)(3)} of the Basic Agreement I believe. What has happened in the past is that players and teams negotiate through the press. The player lets the media know he'd like to be back in ________ and the team let's the player know in a similar way that they would love to have the guy back, etc. etc. Both sides have ways of letting the other know what the contract might include but there can be no formal contact nor can the player start practicing with the team in spring training. ------- Which brings me to a thought about why Pudge is trying to get himself signed right now. On January 23rd the world series team visits the White House to meet the President. This is a perfect opportunity for discussions to take place in an informal setting. My guess is Pudge doesn't want to go without a date (wink). If he's going to take adeal with the Tigers or the Expos my guess is it's before then.
January 17, 200422 yr The Marlins did this with John Wehner back in 1998. I think they can agree upon a minor league contract before that date but he cannot play for the Marlins before May 1st. But it looks like he'll be elsewhere.
