What Defines an Ace?

Featured Replies

i'm interested in doing a little experiement, but first i need help on one simple guidline. what defines an 'ace' starting pitcher?

an ace?

no worse than a 3.20 era..... i think that may do it for me

i voted other because it is more than a statistical thing:

an ace must be the teams leader, he must give his team the confidence that they SHOULD win every game he pitches. even if they dont win every game its just the mental thing that everyone believes in that pitcher...

and let me add the 200IP too

110IP aint gonna cut it

and I agree with KJC too

You cannot quantify "Ace." Beckett is as an ace, and some people think Burnett is though he really never qualified. "Ace" is a term given to a starter who helps leads his team one way or another more so than other pitchers. However, overall greatness (like the big 3 in oakland) also makes each pitcher an ace.

Pretty much, there's no true definition. If the starter strikes fear into the hearts of the hitters, he's an ace.

almost always the stats backup these same qualities.

I voted other:

Rotation Ace = The pitcher that give you the best opportunity to win at the games he is on the mound

On a crappy team, the 'Ace' of the staff may have a 4.00+ ERA. . . So stats doesn't define an ace
