February 19, 200422 yr ESPN.com Ron Artest of the Pacers will have surgery Thursday for a ligament tear in his left thumb and will be out indefinitely, the team announced. Artest first hurt the thumb on his non-shooting hand during a game against the Nets on Jan. 17, when it was diagnosed as a sprain. He aggravated the injury when he fell in the third quarter of Tuesday night's loss to the Hornets. Artest, who did not start Tuesday because he was late returning from the All-Star weekend in Los Angeles, clutched his thumb during several possessions and shot 1-for-10 for the game. He made 11 of 13 free throws and finished with 13 points. He did not speak with reporters after the game. Artest missed the workout before the game because he did not return in time from Los Angeles. He was not on the flight that was originally scheduled for him and had to take a later flight.
