May 13, 200323 yr Just wanted to throw in a few things from the interview. Classy as always.... He says he had a pretty good idea the firing was coming. All kinds of anonymous statements get out from this front office, and he'd heard the rumor of the "list" of managers that could replace him. Says he doesn't have any ill feelings with the front office, but that some things could have been done more professionally. For instance one thing that upset him was the Miami Herald called him about the firing less than 10 minutes after he got the news himself. That's just plain classless. Makes you think they told the Herald writer about it even before Torborg. Regardless, you don't go to the media that quick out of respect for a person. He says he knew the front office had a personality conflict with Arnsberg all the way back since Montreal, but that he's never known a pitching coach who worked harder with his pitchers, so he wanted to keep Brad. There was an unnamed individual in the front office who Torborg really seemed to have a problem with, but said it wasn't Sampson when the host guessed it was him. Not Loria obviously, & he said he thought Beinfest was a bright guy even though they disagreed at times, so I guess it wasn't any of the "big 3". He also felt that the front office needed to take some responsibility for things also, instead of heaping it all on the coaches. All in all he was disappointed, but not crushed. I think he believes there were unfair expectations put on this group. He said this team can contend, but everything has to work right. Continued to defend his use of Burnett also. He was happy for the opportunity and to get back to coaching and said he's already gotten 2 job offers: one from another team and one to do broadcasting, so he'll be just fine.
May 13, 200323 yr Yea he should of known it was coming with the way the the club was pla ying (losing 6 in a row). He was a very nice manager and good with the players but he didnt kow how to manage a bullpen and when someone is slumping like D.Lee he puts him 4th batter! I Hope Jeff doesnt take it too hard on himself...

May 13, 200323 yr I agree with this comment, "He also felt that the front office needed to take some responsibility for things also, instead of heaping it all on the coaches." Management also need to take some blame first not working out something with Al Martin. Also not making a move to improve the Bully before the season (Matt Herges ring a bell). just a few things that come to mind.
May 14, 200323 yr Lee spent 11 games at the #4 slot. He batted .231 in 39 AB. The best? Encarnacion, .232 in 69ABs. What about Lowell? .184 in 38AB. We have not gotten good production all year from the #4 no matter who was there, but surprisingly Lee was among the best with AVG. Torborg got fired because this was a cosmetic procedure - the fans were clamoring for a change and this was the easiest thing to do. It may turn things around, a little, but we wont all of a sudden become contenders. The firing had to happen though, too bad for Torborg.
