hot4beckett
Beckett strikes out 3 Orioles in spring training debut BY CLARK SPENCER [email protected] FORT LAUDERDALE - Josh Beckett -- pitching for the first time since he recorded the final out of the World Series in October -- struck out three Baltimore Orioles in the first inning of his spring training debut on Thursday. But Beckett also gave up a run -- something he didn't do in his Game 6 victory against the New York Yankees -- on Rafael Palmero's single. Ramon Castro gave the Marlins the lead in the top of the second, though, on his two-run homer off Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson. FOX LOOKS TO ADD CHANGEUP Reliever Chad Fox said he intends to experiment with a changeup this spring, hoping the addition of an off-speed pitch will not only make him more effective but also extend his career. ''I just think it's going to add some more years,'' said Fox, who has thrown only fastballs and sliders. ``It'll take some stress off the slider.'' Fox said he used his new changeup in batting practice with good results. 'Guys are going, `What the heck is that?' '' Fox said. ``I'm going to throw the heck out of it in the early [spring training] games. Whether it works remains to be seen.''
