Marlins update

Posted March 12 2004

Today's opponent: St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium, Jupiter, 1:05 p.m.

Pitching plans: RHP Josh Beckett will make his third Grapefruit League start. RHP Andy Benes will start for the Cardinals. Also scheduled to pitch for the Marlins: RHP Ronald Belisario, RHP Mike Flannery, LHP Michael Tejera and RHP Toby Borland.

Worth noting: The Marlins will take 34 players, including 12 pitchers, to Mexico City this weekend for their two-game exhibition set against the Astros. Every member of the Marlins' projected Opening Day lineup will make the trip except for 3B Mike Lowell, who is sidelined with an elbow injury. ... The Marlins and Astros will use the designated hitter during the series. ... ESPN Dream Job contestants Zachariah Selwyn and Kelly Miligan were at Roger Dean Stadium to interview Marlins players. ... Relievers Blaine Neal, Nate Bump and Mike Neu combined to throw three hitless innings during the Marlins' 5-4 win over the Twins on Thursday.

Broadcast: None.

Maybe Beckett will only throw like 12 pitches per inning and go like 6 innings. =)

Cards batter Beckett in win over Marlins

By Associated Press

March 13, 2004

Josh Beckett gave up four runs in the first inning, then dominated in the next three as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Florida Marlins 5-2 on Friday in Jupiter, Fla.

Cody McKay hit a three-run triple in the first against the World Series MVP, who retired 10 of his last 11 batters.

I loved this quote from Beckett after the game....

"I asked for another one because the first inning was so bad," he said. "I wanted to get my ERA down to 200.00."
