Who should be our regular catcher?

Featured Replies

Redmond had two more RBI's yesterday at the Bithorn, and he seems to be a more clutch and timely hitter than CAstro. I've been of the opinion that he should be our regular catcher, as he's a better hitter (not power wise, obviously) than Castro.

Your thoughts, gentlemen?? :mischief2

Since I dont believe in clutch hitting I'll go with them splitting duties.

Redmond has always been a good hitter, theres no doubt about that. The thing with Castro is that he has good upside, and of course, his power. We know what we are getting with redmond, and it would be ok to have him as starting C because of his AVG and because of the clutch ability hes shown as of late. Lets not give up on the man Castro yet, I still think he has yet to show somethin.....

I like the balance right now. I think Jack is doing a good job of keeping both involved. I also like the idea of using Red when Dontrelle pitches...I think Red helps keep Willis in cotrol on the mound. When Castro heats up this won't be much of an issue.

Redmond would fizzle (no, no fo shizzle!! please God!) if he played everyday. He is best used in spurts. We need to get Castro some consistent looks though - he is our starter. The guy hit well in ST, but right now is just struggling. So is Conine. I think right now it is about trying to get as few struggling bats in the lineup as possible. Choi anc Cabs are on fire. So FREE CASTRO!!!

You brought up a good point on Redmond. Now free Abe and give a day off to Conine today.

Some of you say Red should be used in streaks...why do you say that? SEcond, who's better defensively, red or castro?

I'd say let Ramon do it because he has always been groomed to be our guy. Red is an amazing back-up, but I still don't see him putting up numbers like this in a full season...

You know, IMO I don't think Choi is hitting up to his hot level yet.

But yeah, Cabs is in the zone right now. Fun stuff to watch.

To answer the defense question, Red gets around better and blocks balls better. But Ramon is now slouch back there, he is good defensively. Arm wise Ramon has a cannon. Red has a an accurate arm but he can be run on.

The reason people say use Red in spurts is because we tried Big Red as our everyday catcher if you remember a few years ago, and he just kept running out of gas. If he is used in spurts he is the best backup in baseball.

Redmond is very limited offensively. He hits singles. He's good at hitting singles but that's all he does. He can get on base but he's so slow that he can only advance one base at a time. He also has a pretty big left/righty split. His lifetime OPS against lefties is .834 but only .663 vs. righties.

Castro has a better upside. If he washes out, I'd go looking for another starting catcher before I'd give the job to Redmond. I wouldn't want to start Redmond more than 50-70 times a year.
