Is it a sport? Yes. Racing is a sport. And before you disregard my opinion as biased, consider this: I am a fishing fanatic but I don't think THAT'S a sport. NASCAR and any type of racing is a sport.

Those NASCAR drivers take tremendous hits, deal with 140+ degree heat in those cars, drive 3 times as fast as you do on the Interstate.

Even if you don't think it's a sport, it deserves some credit. Cause it's no cake walk competing in those races. :cool

So I guess street racers are athletics now.

Ummm, no. Street racing is a hell of a lot different than NASCAR. If you can't see that then you've probably never watched a NASCAR race. Read my post above as well as CFDodgeMarlin40's and tell me a street racer has to have all of those traits/skills.

Any way, NASCAR should be considered as a sport somewhat since they do get injuries and they sweat in the sport because it gets hot in the car. It's not easy, racing in NASCAR competiton.

Street racing?

Clarify for me, because I know of no sanctioned street racing league.

If you have to define it, it ain't much of a sport.

You just said any type of racing is a sport. You didn't say it has to be a league but I agreed to NASCAR is sport.

Yes, I stand by what I said. The question is not "is street racing a sport?", it's "is street racing, RACING?"

What kind of street racing are you talking about? Sooped-up Honda Civics that sound like weedeaters running drag races illegally?

I could care less about street racing. I just wanted to know if street racing is sport since you said that any type of racing is sport.

I've actually been to see this. Pretty awesome when the Nitrous kicks in. But its still def. not a sport.

I'm suprised it took someone this long to come up with that stupid answer. The answer of someone who has probably never watched even a full lap of racing.

There are NASCAR drivers from Maine, Washington State, California, Nevada, and Wisconsin. It is NOT a bunch of rednecks. There are only a few of those left, and they're being quickly replaced by the "young guns" and California kids. :(

My favorite, Sterling Marlin, is the only driver (out of 43) from Tennessee.

There are no drivers from Alabama. There are no drivers from Mississippi.

And about the "driving in circles...." :thumbdown

Have you ever driven in circles with 42 other cars at 190 mph, rubbing, bumping and crashing (sometimes going airborne)?

Sounds boring don't it? :mischief2

Have you ever won a race by .002 seconds? By less than an inch?

It happens, and it's damn exciting.

But you stay on your high horse, and miss out on this awesome sport. :cool

You have to be in tremendous physical shape to be a stock car driver, you can't be a fat tub and expect to drive one of those cars for 300-400 laps and there is a lot of strategy involved like when you need to come into the pits and when exactly to pass a driver and so on.

Is it a sport? YES. :thumbup

Are they athletes?

NO? :thumbdown

For all reasons stated above, Yes they are :thumbup No, I mean big deal they're in shape. Mailmen have to be in shape too, they're not athletes.

They don't lift weights or stuff like that, they just get into a car and drive real fast. The pilots at the Air and Sea Show are athletes?

Don't get me wrong, NASCAR is a sport but these guys aren't athletes.

Don't get me wrong, NASCAR is a sport but these guys aren't athletes. Actually most do lift weights and are very strong. It takes a lot of strength and endurance to handle a car with that much horsepower that weighs so much for 500 miles while going 180+MPH at some tracks.

Thank you! You can't be some tub of lard and expect to run 200-500 laps in a race. The heat alone will cause you to pass out. So that is why these guys must be at peak conditioning and thats what makes them Athletes
