San Francisco's Barry Bonds and Houston's Roger Clemens named Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month for April

?

Six-time Most Valuable Player Award winner Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants and six-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens of the Houston Astros were overwhelmingly voted National League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month of April, respectively.

Bonds led the Major Leagues in batting average (.472), home runs (10), slugging percentage (1.132), on-base percentage (.696), and walks (39). He drove in 22 runs, scored 21, and reached base via a hit or walk in each of his 23 games played. On April 13, he hit his 661st career home run, passing Willie Mays for third place on the all-time list. This was the 12th Pepsi Player of the Month Award of his career.

Clemens compiled a Major League-best 5-0 record and allowed seven earned runs in 32.1 innings for a 1.95 ERA. He allowed 21 hits and struck out 32 batters. With his 315th win on April 30, he passed Gaylord Perry to move into 15th place on the all-time wins list, and also became the first Astros' pitcher to win five games in April. Clemens is in his first season in the National League after spending the previous 20 years in the American League, where he won 14 previous Pepsi Pitcher of the Month Awards.

Other pitchers receiving votes were: Florida's Armando Benitez (0.66 ERA, tied for league-lead with 10 saves); New York's Tom Glavine (3-1, 1.64 ERA); and San Diego's Jake Peavy (1-1, 1.86 ERA). Three other players received votes: Richard Hidalgo (.341, 4 HR, 22 RBI) of the Houston Astros; Moises Alou (.361, 7 HR, 20 RBI) of the Chicago Cubs; and Jack Wilson (.369, 2 HR, 8 RBI) of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bonds and Clemens will each receive a specially designed trophy for being named National League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month.

Beltran, Brown named American League Pepsi Player, Pitcher of the Month

Kansas City Royals outfielder Carlos Beltran and New York Yankees right-hander Kevin Brown have been named the American League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for April.

Beltran led the Major Leagues with 23 runs in April and tied for the AL-high with eight home runs. In 21 games, the 27-year-old batted .316 (25-for-79) with four doubles, one triple, 19 RBI, 17 walks and seven stolen bases. He posted a .696 slugging percentage and a .434 on-base percentage. Beltran hit the first game-winning home run on Opening Day in Kansas City history on April 5 and matched career-highs with four hits and two home runs at Chicago on April 14. This was Beltran's first career monthly award and the first Pepsi Player of the Month by a Royal since Mike Sweeney in June 2001.

Brown, who is 4-0 for the first time since 1990, ended April tied for the AL lead in wins, recording a 2.70 ERA over 40.0 innings (36 H, 8 BB, 24 SO). The 39-year-old went six innings or more in each of his six starts, allowing only one earned run in four of them. He also became the 101st pitcher ever to reach 200 career wins. This was Brown's third career monthly award (August 1996 with Florida and May 2003 with Los Angeles).

Other players receiving votes were Boston's Manny Ramirez (.388, 5 HR, 16 RBI), Minnesota's Lew Ford (.419, 3 HR, 17 RBI, tied for AL-best .710 SLG), Jorge Posada (.290, 8 HR, 21 RBI, tied for AL-best .710 SLG) of the Yankees, Cleveland's Ronnie Belliard (ML-best .417, 11 RBI, AL-best .500 OBP), Michael Young (.368, 3 HR, 14 RBI) of Texas, Detroit's Rondell White (.306, 5 HR, AL-high 22 RBI) and Ivan Rodriguez (.356, 16 RBI), Anaheim's Troy Glaus (7 HR, 20 RBI, .662 SLG), and Oakland's Jermaine Dye (.298, 7 HR, 20 RBI).

Pitchers receiving consideration were Brown's teammates, Mariano Rivera (0.63 ERA, 8 saves) and Javier Vazquez (3-2, 2.55), Tim Hudson (3-0, 2.72) of the Athletics, Chicago's Esteban Loaiza (4-0, 3.71), Francisco Cordero (1.93 ERA, 7 saves) of the Rangers, and Juan Rincon (4-0, 2.25) of the Twins.

Beltran and Brown each will receive a specially designed trophy as the American League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month.

Over Beltran? Naw let him earn it this month... Dont get me wrong Ford did earn it this month but Beltran has better numbers.

Beltran:

.434 OBP, .696 SLG

Ford:

.471 OBP, .710 SLG

so only two stats are worth considering?

actually, three. OBP, SLG, and AB/ SO ratio

So if you look at AB/ SO ratio:

Beltran: 1 K/ 6.08 AB

Ford: 1 K/ 13 AB

Ford got robbed

What is this, senior citizen's month?

I think Soriano will be the AL player of the month in may, Pujols in the NL, AL pitcher will be Curt Schilling and NL pitcher will be Roy Oswalt.

Of course, there are just May predictions.

I bet Willis would have probally got the award if he didnt mess up in his last start.

Not with the month Clemens was having. It was comparable, if not better than Willis. Plus, Willis will have many more chances to get this honor, Clemens won't.
