Everyday Eddie Guardado

According to Gammons (and the Mariners record) this guy will be on the market very soon if not already. He is the perfect fit for the Marlins. He is a lefty who could be an option as a closer if (more likely when) Benitez leaves next season. He signed a 3 year deal this off-season for $13 million and makes $4 million this year. I think there are mutual options in the deal but I do not know the details. Look at his numbers in the Metrodome. What will his numbers be like in Joe Robbie?

The question is whether Beinfest would give up a major prospect for him. I think he is worth it. He would make the Marlins similar to late last year when the 8th and 9 th innings were certain. Our staters can get us through 7.

Not that he is not great...

but I am not a fan of having two closers on one team. Egos clash, and people want innings. I'm sure niether Armando or Eddie would want to give up their "closer" status.

It worked last year I guess (with loop and Ugeth).....but I just dont like it

I can dream:

Here's his contract breakdown:

based on who picks up the option (team or player) he's a $4.5 million player (that's if he picks up the option) if the team picks up the option, he makes $6 mil next year and $7 mil in 2006. He gets a $1 mil bonus for "closer" status or 60 games finished in 2004. There also is a mutual opt-out for 2005 and 2006.

I would love to have him...would he accept a set-up role though?

He did when he signed with the Mariners, I just don't know if we're going to be willing to trade the pieces needed to get him. It would take Stokes or Hermida two guys I don't think we should trade...

He signed as the closer

he is the closer with the Mariners

He signed as the closer

he signed as a set-up man for Sasaki, but Sasaki left for Japan.

He signed as the closer

Nope, when he signed he was behind Sasaki and Hasegawa. That's why his contract has the games finished clause meaning he gets set up man money ($4 mil for a guy of Guardado's caliber is pretty modest) until he is given the closer job. Think about it, why else would there be such language about finishing games and being named "closer" in a contract...

or they were worried about is injury.... i forget

Either way, Eddie signed as the closer, with him and the M's knowing he'd be the closer

An extra 1.5 or 2 millions could have gone a looooong way! oh well.

He won't play for another NY team ever. And I think he won't be happy on a big market team either.

I think this is a great idea...I wouldn't be surprised if Nunez and Castro were both inculded in a package deal. Nunez was mentioned by the Seattle paper last week and I belive the Mariners could use a young catcher - Dan Wilson is getting up there in age. Obviously more would have to be included but this could be a start.

:thumbup

A guy can dream right? After all they did dump Carlos Guillen for virtually nothing in the off-season and he's been tearing it up for Detroit.

he'll definetly want to be on a small market team, but that doesn't mean a small sum of money for 'mando. TSwift's right though, too early to talk about that.
