I need a new hard drive....at least 40 gb probably 80gb But I was wondering if my computer would become to hot with both hard drives in there at the same time (one directly above the other in the 3.5" bays) Currently I only have a fan on my processor and one fan in the front/bottom of my computer. June 8, 200422 yr Author Just mount the second one someplace more convenient than the stock drive bay. Nothing says you have to conform to the standard design. Those "L" shapped slot blanks used for covering up unused card slots make for dandy brackets for wedging drives into places. Get creative - most modern drives can be mounted in any direction, up/down/rightsideup upside down etc. The only thing to avoid is having the drive spindle mounted at an angle to the ground - verticle is OK, horizontal is OK - diagonal, not OK. Yeah thats what I was thinking.... But I have had overheating issues in the past and my tower isn't very roomy. Does anyone have any comments on external hard drives using USB 2.0?
June 8, 200422 yr I got a USB external a couple of months ago and it rocks. It may cost a little more, but it's a heck of a lot easier than installing a new HD.

June 8, 200422 yr for about 300-400 dollars more you can get a new system.... external drives are a hassle. sure they are easier to install...but it really only take 5 minutes, 10 minutes tops to install a new harddrive. the most importnat thing is to make sure you ground yourself first and plug things in properly. as far as the heating issue....you should be fine, but if you are already having overheating problems in the past, you should be upgrading anyway yoru fans, your tower or something already.

I did upgrade the fan... I was thinking about installing a hard drive cooler or one of those fans that goes into the front of a 5.25" bay
June 8, 200422 yr either should do fine.... but its the processor that is probably generating the majority of the heat like they usually do. do you have a fan just for hte processor? those usually help.... cuase if you are having overheating problems now, its best to nip that in the bud now, instead of being limited for future uses becuase of this problem.

But with two internal hard drives right on top of eachother I think I will... BTW, I'm thinking about adding 512MB of ram....will ram be adding much heat?

June 9, 200422 yr Author But I have had overheating issues in the past and my tower isn't very roomy. Go "ugly" - just bolt the drive to the outside of the case at the back and snake an IDE cable out an unused card slot opening. You'd probably have to get a power extender cable or solder up an extension using some salvaged device power cables from a junked power supply (I always cut the cables off junked PS's because they always come in handy for "custom" work like this) In that case I could just lay the drive on the top of the case or the bottom of the inside of the case...right?
