The whole "controversy" was so contrived. If Drew Carey was so upset that the celebrity votes weren't the only ones counted and that he was just "being used as a face" then maybe he should of had one of his people actually research the show. Sorry to inconvienience you Drew, looks like a free weekend bender in Vegas with strippers, comps and binge drinking was all useless since your vote didn't count as much as you thought.

 

 

Also, the editing is atrocious. I've seen better editing watching the 1 hour version of Blues Brothers at 3AM on cable access with the vulgarity cut out.

LOS ANGELES - At least two big-name comedians, Drew Carey and Brett Butler, are fuming that the joke was on them when they served as talent judges for a new edition of the NBC reality show ?The Last Comic Standing.?

 

The two sitcom veterans complained Monday that NBC executives and producers of the show overruled their votes for the 10 aspiring comics worthy of advancing to the televised competition set to air this summer.

 

?I thought it was crooked and dishonest,? Carey, star of the ABC sitcom ?The Drew Carey Show,? told entertainment trade paper The Hollywood Reporter.

 

Separately, Butler, the former star of ?Grace Under Fire,? posted a message on her Web site saying the judges were ?both surprised and disappointed at the results and ... we had NOTHING to do with them.?

 

Questions also were raised about business ties between the show?s producers and some of the comics chosen as the 10 finalists. One executive producer, Barry Katz, also manages two of those performers ? Gary Gulman and a comic who goes by the stage name of Ant ? as well as host Jay Mohr.

 

But NBC said Katz recused himself entirely from the talent selection because, as one executive put it, ?he knows way too many comedians.? Likewise, Mohr played no role in choosing contestants, the network said.

 

NBC defends the casting process

NBC executives insisted that Carey, Butler and two other judges ? Anthony Clark of the sitcom ?Yes, Dear? and Tess Drake, a finalist from last summer?s ?Last Comic? ? were not the only ones involved in the final ?casting? process.

 

NBC said it was up to network brass and producers to decide who made the cut, weighing the opinions of the celebrity panel as just one factor. An NBC spokeswoman said a disclaimer to that effect airs as part of the show?s credits.

 

?Last Comic Standing? is a game of elimination in which 10 unknown comedians share a house for the duration of the series, riffing on each other and performing stand-up routines each week for a studio audience, which votes one individual off the show at the end of each episode. The last one left wins a talent deal with NBC.

 

The 10 house comics were winnowed from a group of 20 finalists who performed five minutes of material for the panel of judges before a live audience in Las Vegas last month.

 

?We followed our rules to the T. We did exactly what we did last year,? Jeff Gaspin, executive vice president for programming at NBC, told Reuters. ?We?ve seen these comics over the course of several months, so we take many things into consideration.?

 

Gaspin said hard feelings on the part of Carey and Butler stemmed from a ?miscommunication.... They were never there to pick who?s going into the house. It was pretty clear they were not clear what their roles were.?

 

But one contestant who spoke on condition of anonymity said that regardless of who made the decision, ?One thing for sure is it wasn?t about who was the funniest.... It wasn?t a big misunderstanding. It was a big deception.?

 

Carey?s spokeswoman said Carey and the other judges only learned after the fact that their votes were not the deciding factor ?and that the people who were elected were cast more for a reality show and not ... as the most gifted comedians.?

 

Gaspin acknowledged that the network was interested in finding a good mix of personalities for the show.

 

?We make a very clear distinction between the casting process and the competition. The competition doesn?t kick in until they?re in the house,? he said, adding that then the studio audience alone votes.

Then why the hell make it look like it is an elimination contest? Why bring comedians and pose them as "judges"?

 

I am so pissed that Jim Norton got eliminated because of this sham! I'm not watching it! They f***ing water down everything this days to make it "commercial".

At the end of the day this is a reality show. The draw is not in hearing the same jokes over and over as each week passes by. It's all about them living together in "the house." That's why they picked the personalities that are most combustible and pose the greatest potential for conflict. And it's also the reason why people watch.

 

Aside from the first two episodes when the routines/jokes are new, this show really has nothing to do with comedy. They could be picking out plumbers and it wouldn't make a difference. In the end it's just another cheap pandering to an idiotic american public who likes to watch people bicker and snipe at each other on the idiot box.

Well, this was all shown on the show last night. It's no REAL surprise, because, well Ant isn't funny. He doesn't deserve to be in the house.

 

Also, Carey and Butler were shown last night that their scores where only taken into consideration (notice Jay Mohr was absent from ALL the backstage stuff). My only thing was that the guy who kept pacing backstage was a tool. It's a contest, in ANY contest does the best person always win or advance. Hell no.

 

It's enough for me that the people who got the MOST crowd response (EXCEPT the last guy) got on. The only thing that's shady is most of Mohr's connections seem to make it somehow...

To respond to Brians question: No, I thought it was a contest like every other contest. If it was a casting call they should have made it a casting call not a "contest".

It is really a shame that the funniest comics arent the ones that are going to win. If they are the funniest comic then their routine will make people laugh and it shouldnt matter what there personality is like. I didnt watch last season but really liked the first couple weeks this year, but last nights show left a sour taste in my mouth. But it got the job done, because I will still watch to see who ends up winning in the end.

When they put "judges" instead of "talent scouts" it makes you think it is a contest in which the Judges not the executives of the network have the last word... I guess I'm foolish for thinking it was a contest for the funniest comic in first place... Shoot me.
