July 8, 200422 yr Author The playing of God Bless America during the stretch is just another sly move to force phony patriotism down the throats of a captive audience. Never before 9/11 was it custom to sing "God Bless America" during the middle of the 7th inning. It amazes me that people do not see their rights slowly being taken away. I was recently at a Sarasota Red Sox game on the west coast of Florida last week and during the singing of it, a group of people who did not stand up were asked to leave the stadium. I will make it a point now to NOT stand up when they choose to play God Bless America at any game I attend. I'm a very patriotic person, and I proudly stand up for the Nartional Anthem, but this whole thing of phony patriotism instead of the real "7th inning stretch" is getting out of hand. That's my take on it, and I'm interested to see what other views on this issue are. 445224 Oh for pete's sake :boo-woo Can't handle hearing the word God... but yet I have to sit back, not be a bigot and watch "married" dudes make PDA's. You people suck. 446936 Oh, I can handle the word "god" thats not my problem. In fact I'm not one of those people that has a big problem with the Pledge and the whole "under god" line. As far as I'm concerned if they played "My country Tis' of thee" during the stretch I still wouldnt support it, despite that song not having any referances to god, You obviously dont get that, that is not the problem. THIS is what pisses me off: the playing of God Bless America during the stretch signifies support for the decisions of our president, which basically supports this war. dont expect me to stand and show support and phony patriotism towards the garbage decisions of a P.O.S. president. And for those of you who say it's disrespectful to not stand during this. It was, and still is NEVER a custom to stand during God Bless America.

It supports America. God bless AMERICA. We live in an awesome country and have so much to be thankful for. The song can support the president if you want it to. It can support the troops, our freedoms, whatever. I dont see how singing "God Bless America" automatically makes you singing praises about Bush. That's poppycock.

America right now is run by a group of yahoo's who have no clue what they are doing and have made costly mistakes that have taken lives of countless Iraqis and 800 and some odd Americans (not including the thousands who are disabled for life after losing limbs). singing God Bless America is not appropriate now more than ever, especially after this country and it's administration has earned itself a bad name by many other countries and the majority of the population in the U.S. by fighting an un-just war and killing innocent people. I know I'm coming off as "un-american" to many, but You have to see it the way I do, even though one may not agree with it. I can be as patriotic as anyone, My family has a long military history, In fact 2 members are overseas right now. I support the troops 110 % but what I do NOT support is the reason why they're there

July 8, 200422 yr supporting troops and supporting Bush are not the same! :banghead ! That is so elementary
July 9, 200422 yr The truth is singing god Bless America is showing pride and love for your country and has nothing to do with how you feel about the current administartion. The fact that you can openly critsize bush and the errors you feel his admin. has made is cause enough to praise this great country. Many people around the world live in places where if you say anything like that about the exec. they have you executed. This is a great country we live in and we need to celebrate our rights, and come november you will have the choice to vote bush out of office. So say loud and say it proud. god bless america!!

I don't see any of the lyrics saying "support our troops" or "we support the president". I feel that you're looking into way too much here man. Way too much.

And I just put that as nicely as possible.
July 9, 200422 yr Author Some people have trouble looking through things to what they REALLY mean, They take things word for word as they are being given to them. "Why does "God Bless America" have to support anything but God blessing America? I don't see any of the lyrics saying "support our troops" or "we support the president". None of the lyrics say "support the troops" or "we support the president" but if you take the time to properly analyze it, which I've done previously in the thread. You will notice that it wasnt till' after The war in Iraq started that we were asked to stand for this during the 7th inning. The meaning of this all was to support the war in Iraq. Now, If you support what is happening in Iraq than you must support the president that made the decision. I dont support either So you're boycotting anything that supports the troops? If you've read my previous posts, I cant understand why you would think I wouldnt support the troops, I've got family at War right now, I dont see how I could not support them. But Supporting the Troops and Supporting the War are two completely different things
July 9, 200422 yr Supporting the Troops and Supporting the War are two completely different things Exactly. I was under the impression that "God Bless America" started being played at public events such as sporting events after 9/11. They have been playing that at college football games that I've attended after 9/11. I cant remember if they played it last summer when I was home, when I went to a Marlins game. But, as DW22 pointed out...you're looking waayyy too much into this. Overanalyzing this stuff, man. It's a song. Take the song for what it's worth. Don't worry about secret propaganda issues being produced by the government to get into the unsuspecting minds of baseball fans everywhere.
July 9, 200422 yr Author The song was played in baseball games and such after 9/11 not the war in iraq 448593 It is also being played throughout the duration of the war in Iraq
July 9, 200422 yr The song was played in baseball games and such after 9/11 not the war in iraq 448593 It is also being played throughout the duration of the war in Iraq 448601 Even if we hadnt gone to war in iraq it would have kept being played, and furthermore in times of hardship we need to support OUR country. And this does not mean the dministration, because Bush nor Kerry are the United states of america, this country has existed before both of them and will exist long after they are both dead. God bless AMERICA, because we are under attack from foreign fundamentalists who loathe our way of life and feel that we do not deserve to live. Play at games and such to remind us that we are all americans here, regardless of what nationality we stemmed from, and whether you agree with this war or not, or with bush or not, america has been kind to all of us including you. And in this country we have certain rights that other around the globe dont have, and if you feel a govt official is taking awy these rights, you have the right to fight for it. Thats why we sing it, dont think so 2 dimensionally, america's greatness lies beyond our military might, it lies with our resilience in times of trouble and in the belief that human beings are born to be free
July 9, 200422 yr Author I agree with most of what you said... But I believe In times of hardship it's not necessary to play God Bless America... The National Anthem is enough. The National Anthem I proudly stand up for since it is our Nations song God Bless America is not
July 9, 200422 yr I can't believe this thread is still going, but now I see why LCastillo I just can't see where you're coming from This was played directly after 9/11 and before any military actions were taken ... my perspective was that it was to show solidarity as a nation about what makes this nations great and i'm not sure how you get a rah-rah for our leaders conotation from the lyrics ... it was written by Irving Berlin, a immagrant who came to prominence in his new land as a patriotic song in the 1900s ... he didn't think it had much commerical legs and it wasn't until the late 30s that he broke it out and Kate Smith sung it let's look at these inflamatory lyrics "god bless america, land that I love" - this is pretty simple, the guy love america and is grateful for the nation and what it provides "stand beside her and guide her thru the night with a light from above" - this is like the "lord give me strength" style of prayer - in times of darkness and when things are difficult give the nation strength to persevere and move in a forward direction - unless you think the american president is god or the light from above then there is not a reference to the nations leaders at this point either "From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam - god bless america, my home sweet home" - he's not just giving a shout out to his boys on the east side .... he wants to be thankful for the entire nation and what it represents really don't see how this supports Bush or the american leaders at all my next post will deal with other issues I'm having
July 9, 200422 yr now for some of the other stuff There is nothing wrong in it's playing Even if you disagree with the administration the nation goes on regardless .... if you benefit from this nation you should respect this nation the fact that you can disagree with the administration openly should be a reason to sing thanks for this nation even if you feel the administration and war make the nation look foolish in the eyes of the world it's just the more reason to stand up and give thanks for what makes this nation great even if you don't agree with it being played, be respectful the nation would work so much better that way ... if everyone could just respect themselves and each other ... i didn't believe in saying the pledge of allegiance, but every morning I stood up respectfully didn't interfere with those who enjoyed such things it seems uncanny to me that anyone is against this so strongly
July 9, 200422 yr and furthermore in times of hardship we need to support OUR country. ......... Thats why we sing it, dont think so 2 dimensionally, america's greatness lies beyond our military might, it lies with our resilience in times of trouble and in the belief that human beings are born to be free exactly .. "guide us through the night" even if you feel that our administration is repressive and horrible and unjust it's more reason to embrace the concepts there is an election in November, we have the option and right to put a new leader in office ... how many nations can change leaders in the middle of a conflict, especially one who acts on his own and is fronting a regime? it truly is a great nation isn't it?

The whole point of this thread wasnt to try to convert people into believeing it was wrong, just sharing my opinion and seeing what other members views were...
July 9, 200422 yr The voting machines are way better than the old style ballots and they prevent a lot of the ballot stuffing and such that used to go on. Ive done a lot of work in miami with those machines so im a fan

No one has to. You support the US economy with every purchase you make. And guess who is in charge of the US economy. You pay taxes at the end of the year, those taxes go to the government. Guess who runs the government.

Meaning, the election can be easily rigged.
July 9, 200422 yr Yea but elections could have been rigged b4 with ballot stuffing and throwing out absentee ballots. Its not perfect but i think its better
