Phillies Notes | Deal for Finley is reported to be close

By Jim Salisbury and Todd Zolecki

Inquirer Staff Writers

The Phillies are close to a deal for Arizona Diamondbacks centerfielder Steve Finley, a National League executive said.

Another source, who is close to the negotiations, said yesterday that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Phillies are the top two contenders for Finley, with the Dodgers the favorites. San Francisco, Texas and San Diego trail the Dodgers and Phillies, with the New York Yankees a possible wild card.

The source said Finley, who has a no-trade clause, would accept a trade to Philadelphia without a contract extension. But the source also said Finley wants a move to be made by Thursday. If he has not been traded by Thursday, he wants to talk with the Diamondbacks about an extension.

Talks about Finley have been slow because of Arizona's involvement with a possible Randy Johnson deal.

The Phillies, who reportedly have offered centerfielder Marlon Byrd in a deal for Finley, still consider starting pitching their top priority before the non-waiver trade deadline Saturday. But if they can't land a starter, they certainly could use a centerfielder and bullpen help.

Finley, 39, is hitting .281 with 23 home runs and 48 RBIs for the last-place Diamondbacks, who have the worst record in baseball. It has been reported that Finley wants to play for the Padres, but the Diamondbacks haven't been impressed with San Diego's offer.

In other trade news, a league source said Seattle Mariners pitcher Ron Villone won't be headed to Philadelphia. He is off the market.

Wagner on the DL? Phillies closer Billy Wagner, who had a cortisone shot in his sore left shoulder Friday, said he hopes to avoid the disabled list. He should know better Monday, when he throws in Florida.

Wagner earlier missed a month of the season with a strained left groin muscle. He made 19 appearances in the 40 games since then.

"It's good that I got overworked," Wagner said. "That means we're winning. But that month off, you lose conditioning time, and you come back and you put the pedal to the metal and I think that had something to do with it. But that's part of the game. I threw 86 innings last year.

"If I don't have to go on the DL, I won't. But you also can't rule it out."

Extra bases. First baseman Jim Thome said his right index finger felt better. He missed Friday's game after a cortisone shot in the finger, but he played yesterday. He went 1 for 4... . Righthander Vicente Padilla will throw a simulated game tomorrow, and make a rehab start Thursday in single-A Clearwater, where he will throw two innings or 35 pitches.

Phils are getting Finely, now we need to get someone or be sellers.

I would love to get Lawton and Toby Hall. Toby Hall still hasn't lived up to his potential and could improve. Hall > Treanor. Matt Lawton is a lefty with some pop and he hits for a good average and plays pretty good D (better than Walker).

I dont see Finley going to Philly, but you never know. Byrd hasnt worked out for them. LA would make a better fit for Finley, who wants to go to S. Cali.

I dont see us getting anyone significant. The biggest hole for us, it is now apparent, is at catcher. Castro's flop killed us. Willingham is not ready, defensively. After him, we dont have a whole lot of future at catcher.

I wouldnt be surprised to see Finley as a Phil by the end of the day

Which is why someone needs to become a marlin before the upcoming series.

Is there any word on whether the Astros are sellers and if they are gonna give up Carlos Beltran?

Look, Beltran isnt going to come to the Marlins. Its Finley or Walker. Beltran is trying to help houston.
