Beckett

Beckett on track for Friday: Josh Beckett felt good after a simulated game on Sunday morning. He has one more hurdle to clear -- a bullpen session that will probably take place Tuesday before rejoining the rotation. Although all signs are positive, the right-hander remains cautious.

"Everything was good today, but we've done this before. It's been OK and I go out and pitch, and it blows up again," Beckett said of his tender middle finger. "There's nothing wrong with it. Right now, we have to play it by ear."

Beckett explained that part of the difficulty is maintaining a delicate balance in terms of the hardening required on his pitching fingers.

"There's a certain way you have to keep the callous," he added. "There is so much friction off this thing that you have to keep a certain callous; you can't have it too big or too small."

Piching coach Wayne Rosenthal said that after examining Beckett's finger and watching him pitch on the mound and in the bullpen, he expects Beckett to be near top form when he returns to action.

"After throwing so many pitches, it's not going to be like it was before he threw, but he stayed compact -- no burn or anything," Rosenthal said. "The marks are still there, but it looked the same as it did before he threw his bullpen. He threw over 100 pitches today, so I think he's OK. He threw about 50 pitches in his bullpen before the simulated game and 58 on the mound."

beckett will come back strong, i think we have seen the last of his finger problem(this year anyway) IMO. he will be the beckett we seen in last years playoffs in the 2nd half.

our rotation will finally be solid :notworthy :notworthy

hopefully! :D

We need Beckett to come back and finish the season strong. It's nice to see his simulated game went well and he had no trouble throwing 100+ pitches.

but will it be too late?

That is a good question. We need a strong home stand, and two key trades this week to have a chance.....a bat and a set-up man.

Could the strongest starting 5 in MLB carry the Fish to the postseason?? :mischief2

Only if they get more than 2 runs to work with :banghead

Stating we have the strongest 5 is a bit of a stretch so far. Willis and Beckett have been very inconsistent....as well as Penny to a lesser degree. AJ has shown signs of brilliance, but is still working on his control.

We may have the potential to have the best starting 5, but until they all start pitching to their ability all we have is a pretty good rotation.

I know, but I have high hopes :whistle
