Volleyball Men : Italy beats USA in four sets? 15 Aug. 2004

ATHENS, 15 August Italy beat the United States in four-sets, 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23) at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.

Guided offensively by the spikes of Andrea SARTORETTI (7 points in the first set), Italy proved too tough for the United States in the first set. American blocking may have done a good job (6 kill-blocks) but they were unable to finish their attacks correctly (just 8 from 23 spikes). Italy won 25-21.

Inspired by the excellent performance of Clayton STANLEY, USA came back with a 25-21 win in the second set.

Things changed in the third set. Italy found their rhythm and beat the US with ease, 25-17.

The fourth set was a thriller. Both teams fought to win each single rally. Italy took the lead in the beginning, but the Americans were the first team to reach the 20-points-limit, 20-18. However, Italy proved their experience and their ability to handle difficult situations. A spike by SARTORETTI and a fault attack by William PRIDDY (USA) sealed Italy's victory, 25-23.

Matej CERNIC, SARTORETTI and Alessandro FEI were the high scorers for the winners with 19, 18 and 17 points respectively, while STANLEY had 21 for the US team.

Volleyball Men : Match 6 / ITA v USA 16 Aug. 2004

ATHENS, 15 August ? Comments from captains Andrea GIANI (ITA) and Lloy BALL (USA), and coaches Gianpaolo MONTALI (ITA) and Doug BEAL (USA).

Andrea GIANI (ITA) ? captain

On Italy?s win against the USA:

"It was a tough game but we were much more determined in crucial moments of the game. Certainly it is a great result for our team but we have to stay focused for the difficult matches to come."

Gianpaolo MONTALI (ITA) ? Head Coach

On the game?s importance for Italy:

"It was a great battle against a very good team. This win is very important for us, although we didn?t play as good as we could. I believe we can perform better in our next matches."

Lloy BALL (USA) ? captain

On the game?s result:

"It?s very upsetting that we lost that match, because we displayed a lot of energy, but we weren?t focused at crucial moments of the game."

Doug BEAL (USA) ? Head Coach

On the way his team lost the match:

"I really don?t have an answer to our performance, but one thing I know is that we cannot give away too many easy points again. It?s a great win for Italy, but we shouldn?t be happy with our team?s efforts. We have a good team and I hope we?ll do a better job in the next games."

china now has 11 gold medals...overall, China has 15 medals compared to 12 by the US...I really hope we pick up the pace!!!

I'm very happy with the Iraqi victories in soccer...both games were awesome! It'd be really nice to see this team win a medal!

I was surprised and impressed with Italy's victory over the USA in volleyball. Lucaze, correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't know Italy was a "powerhouse" in volleyball! I know about China, Cuba, Russia, etc., but Italy?

We're doing well in gymnastics so far, I hope we win the gold in female and a medal in male...they say we have the best male gymnastics team since the 84 Olympics.

What impression do you guys have about people following the Olympics here in the states? Except for now, I've always watched the Olympics from home in Puerto Rico, and I'm under the impression that compared to PR, people here don't care as much for the Olympics. Sure, the coverage is ridiculously good, but a lot of people at my university really aren't excited about this...why?

cant wait to see Phelps vs. Thorpe today. should be great.

one thing im let down with is the hidefinition coverage, its got a 24+ hour delay.... real let down... and its a lot of repeats within itself.
