Admin
Source The San Francisco 49ers' drawn-out search for a head coach ended Tuesday with the hiring of Oregon State's Dennis Erickson, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports. Erickson coached the Seattle Seahawks from 1995-98 and went 31-17 at Oregon State with a 1-2 bowl record. The 55-year-old coach wasn't among the 49ers' three most-talked-about successors to Steve Mariucci -- defensive coordinators Jim Mora Jr. of San Francisco, Ted Cottrell of the New York Jets and Greg Blache of the Chicago Bears. The finalists had second interviews last week. Of the NFL's five offseason head-coach openings, one went to a minority when Cincinnati hired former Redskins defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis, giving the NFL three African-American head coaches. Cottrell and Blache are African-American. Erickson was 31-33 as Seahawks head coach, the same record his successor, Mike Holmgren, has compiled. Before joining Seattle, Erickson won two national titles at the University of Miami, going 63-9 with a 3-3 bowl record in six seasons. There had been rumors that 49ers general manager Terry Donahue was reaching out to potential college candidates, among them Washington coach Rick Neuheisel. But Neuheisel issued a statement Monday saying he wasn't interested in another job. ESPN.com learned that Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who led his team to an Orange Bowl berth last season, last week declined an invitation to interview for the 49ers job. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, according to reports, also rebuffed the 49ers' overtures. San Francisco fired Mariucci on Jan. 15 after going 59-42 and making the playoffs four times in his six seasons. nobody
I DONT CARE! (no offense Admin!) Well this is the Other Sports Forum, and this story certainly does fit into that category. If you do not like other sports (eventhough you said you are such a great football person,) why did you even read the topic? I really do not think that Erickson will work out that well in San Francisco. He was pretty good at U of M, but his stint in Seattle was anything but great (no, not even solid.) Too many egos and personalities to deal with on the 49ers. It was a mistake for them to go shpping for a new sideline general.
~Columnist JC~
dont get me wrong, i LOVE football. i play the damn sport. i have extensive knowledge of it and its history. but the 49ers made a bad decision. they should have picked Mora Jr. they are like the raiders. great offensivlet already, and need the defensive coach for the next level. (vice versa for the bucs)
Rune
Let me ask you something Josh! You have such an extensive knowledge of it, how was the Oregon St program before he arrived?
~Columnist JC~
to be 100% honest, i have no idea. i was honestly talking about the NFL. i dont know s*** about college football.
Rune
Then I'll help you out. They were a lowly fish in a big pond. They were one of those teams that Pac 10 teams looked foward to playing so they could get a confrence win. He had a great year in 2000, not so great in 2001, but then came back for 2002. He is a good coach, and even with his history as The Seahawks coach, is still a good pick up. The problem for the 49ers is now that, they have to deal with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton demanding that they get draft picks taken away. ~Columnist JC~
i still say Mora Jr. If they wanted to go offensive, I would have said Danny Green. A great West Coast offense complemented by a great offensive West Coast coach.
~Columnist JC~
i think they should fire this new guy already...they would OBVIOUSLY be better with Steve.
Rune
Just because he's not a main name, does not mean anything. Look at New England in 2001 or Oakland in 2002. Steve is in Detroit Josh, you can't jsut hire him back and then lose money on Erickson

Das Texan
actually rune.... mike riley began the turnaround at oregon state. it was because of his being hired by the chargers that the opening was ever available to erickson. i dont like erickson. he had that program good for one year and then it went down again.... i think that year was a fluke. and josh let me ask you a basic football question. Ice Bowl What is it?

Das Texan
The Bears won that SuperBowl XX against the Patriots 46-10. The Defensive system employed was the '46' defense. The Offense being referenced is the Run N Shoot.
