Tankersley Impresses

Minor league pitching coordinator Dean Treanor likes what he has seen from first-round pick Taylor Tankersley, a left-hander out of the University of Alabama. Treanor attended one of Tankersley's first three pro appearances with the Jamestown Jammers of the Class A short-season New York-Penn League. He also oversaw a couple of bullpen sessions.

"This guy's got a chance to be real good," Treanor said. "A competitive spirit, fire is in there. That's what you want to see and I saw it. He definitely comes after you, wants to come after you. He's just learning the pro thing."

In three games (11 innings), Tankersley has a 0.82 ERA with two walks and 15 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .059 batting average. The Marlins selected Tankersley 27th overall and signed him to a $1.3 million bonus.

Since he took about a six-week hiatus from the end of the collegiate season until he signed, the Marlins have taken it slow. They plan on keeping his pitch count down and having him attend a mini-camp this offseason.

"We're being real conservative," Treanor said. "We backed him off to make sure he was ready to go. ... His fastball is there. He's in the low 90s and I think that's going to get better once he does some things mechanically. His breaking ball is good, so we want to develop that changeup.

"The competitiveness, you can see it out there on the mound. That's the thing I like best about him. He's got an idea what he wants to do. We've had some discussions and what I like is he'll question you. He's going to figure this out. It was a good No. 1 pick."

Tank! :thumbup

I'm glad they're being very conservative and taking their time with him. I was worried they might rush him through the system too quick.

Can't wait to see him pitch next spring in either Greensboro or witht he Mudcats

Hopefully right here in the Boro.

He's a stud...I love his attitude on the mound.

nc marlin, are you a Tar Heel fan? if so I'm curious about LHP Andrew Miller, he was one of the pitchers the Marlins looked at two years ago to draft. As we know they took Jeff Allison instead. I would think if they had to do it again they would have selected Miller. Miller's agent is also Burnett agent....Man if we could only go back in time :confused He's in the Cape Cod league and is really turning heads there.

Yeah I'm a Tar Heel fan...Miller is a stud. I don't really get to see any games so I couldn't give you any extra info or anything.
