Hi from Los Angeles

Featured Replies

Hi all. Just found this site today. First time viewer, first time poster.

I'm writing to all of ya from LA. I moved here about 9 months ago. But I grew up and went to college in Miami (GO CANES!) so obviously I'm still a fish fan. I got the baseball package and all.

This week a buddy of mine who works for the Fish is in town, so I get to see the Marlins vs. Dodgers for the whole series, and I'm driving to SD for a Fish vs. Padres game too.

Anyway, maybe it's just me, but I thought that original new stadium plan was killer. I know the city won't part with it, but that Bicentennial Park property is ideal for us. It'd give us a "splash area" and it'd be right near the AAArena, cruise port, etc.

As much as I love the OB, and trust me, I'll settle if the Fish have to play next to it, I still can't figure out why the city won't part with the Bicentennial Park area.

Anyone know why?

This place looks like it'll be my new home. Nice meeting all of ya.

Back to work, I guess...

for one reason, the city doesn't want to "waste" valuable land in downtown miami on another sports arena, where they can put a park, and museum also because of the $$$.

but i'll let Mr. Capefish handle this topic.

Good point...they must be raking in the dough on a piece of land that houses that crappy Halloween carnival once a year.

It's perfect for what the Marlins need...and they can still have their museums and shopping malls, parks, yada yada all around the stadiums...almost like a bridge between AAArean and the Marlins park.

One can dream, right?

The Orange Bowl site has 3 things going for it:

1) Cheaper

2) Central

3) OB is there already, so the area is used to crowds.

Well the cheaper part is a definite...

But the OB and Bicentennial property aren't far from each other. Both are pretty central. Both have easy access to I-95. And both allow for people not using I-95 to get their using regular streets (Biscayne, Brickell, etc.)

As for the crowds, well yeah, the OB area is used to crowds of 80,000+ but the Bicentennial area should be just as used to AAArena crowds, not to mention Bayside crowds, cruise port onlookers, and the downtown crowd.

And astecially (sp?) the property near the water is MUCH nicer than the OB area. Unless there is some plan to beautify the OB area, it seems to me that in 10 years it'd be just another stadium.

Just my 2 cents, but I'd go to watch them play anywhere...

They are going to develop the area into a sports complex and hope it brings restaurants and shops there like ESPN Club/Zone.

There's room for that? Are they tearing down the apartment housing around it? Doesn't seem like there's that much space around the OB for another stadium AND a sports complex, but maybe there is.

The OB and Ballpark will be the sports complex. There will also be a community center, aquarium, and parking garage built for the ballpark.

Not bad...should be nice. I just still love that Bicentennial Park area. Think about it...we could have "McKeon Cove."

McKeon Cove would be awesome!

How is Bicentennial Park not central? And how is that area not used to crowds?

I know if they get a new park it's the OB but I still am not going to think it's the better choice.

also it would cost more to improve the infrastructure around bicentennial park.

Too far east for alot in the Metro area to reach. The OB is a better central location than Downtown Miami.

What killed the Bicenteniel site was the Port of Miami. They are very powerful and under no circumstances would they accept 81 more "traffic clogged" dates per year. A large part of their containerized shipping is off-loaded onto trucks which use the surrounding roads at all hours of the day & night. The Port is an extremely powerful economic engine for the whole region, and they got exactly what they wanted (no Marlins Stadium in the vicinity).

The secondary killer was Johnny Winton's vision of "Museum Park", which won't attract enough traffic to make any difference to the Port.
