August 22, 200421 yr I like Alex, but I can understand why people who do watch every game get frustrated with his offense because a lot of the outs he makes can be painful to watch. If his clutch hits and RBis and HRs this season were combined with more simple ground outs and Ks on 5 or 6 pitches as opposed to 3 or 4, there would be less complaining. But the results are the same anyhow. If you want to see a line-up stacked with offense and defense all the way through, then go watch the Yankees because not every team can afford to do that.

August 22, 200421 yr For all you Alex Gonzalez haters out there: Shut the hell up. Yes. Just stop talking. I understand the Frustration. He swings at dumb pitches. And he strikes out frequently. But Its like, he has a couple bad games and You all start saying he's crap. He's hitting .308 on this road trip and has hit many clutch HR's and whatnot,(in general) not to mention the amazing D. So, for all you haters, Shut the hell up. 521967 Chill out. People have a right to voice their frustrations - just like you do. So dont contra-dic-t.
August 22, 200421 yr Thank You. His defense makes up for his offense IMO. 521973 AGon is a below average NL shortstop. 522137 LOL. You got to be kidding me? AGon is a bad ass defensively. I dont care whatever you say. I do believe his defense makes up for his offense. Stats like that dont mean crap to me. The guy is just a natural playing SS. Probaly the best defensively now in the NL. Maybe even the AL. 522210 How do you know that AGon is the best defensively. If you don't care about statistics, then you must watch every shortstop play every game. You must judge the quality of every shortstop by watching them first-hand. Is that right? Just b/c you watch one guy and he plays for your team does not mean he is the best. And if you guys can judge whether his defense makes up for his offense w/o stats then you are much brighter and more observant than I. I have no idea how you could possibly judge that by casually watching games. And the amount of RBIs that Agon has means nothing. If you put an average hitter in his position with the number of Abs he has had w/ guys on base, he would have many more RBIs than Agon.

I think he's the best defensively because he is. Id have to give it to him and Renteria. But Alex is just a bad ass at what he does. The guy is awsome.
August 23, 200421 yr Thank You. His defense makes up for his offense IMO. 521973 The fact is that his defense does not make up for his offense regardless of your opinion. The answer to whether his good defense makes up for his poor offense is not subjective. Statistically his defense does not make up for it. Offensively, he has created 13 less runs than the average NL shortstop (using the RC statistic on ESPN). The RC27 statistic, which is the number of runs a team would score if they were composed of 9 of the same hitter in this case Gonzalez, is more telling because Gonzalez happens to have played more games than most of the shortstops in the NL. A team of Agons would score over a run less per game (4.63 to 3.59 which is a difference of 1.04) than a team of the average NL shortstop. Defensively, Agon's Fielding percentage is .978 and the league average is .976, so there is no real difference there. Agon, however, does get to about 3.4% more balls hit in the zone of the shortstop, which means he has about 3.4% better range than the average shortstop. (this is using the Zone Rating statistic, which is the percentage of balls in play in a player's "zone" that the player gets to.) This translates to his getting to about 13 more balls up to this point in the season than the average shortstop. The only way he could possibly be better than the average shortstop is if those 13 extra balls he gets to all prevent at least 1 run, which is unrealistic. Or even more telling, he would need that 3.4% better range, or 13 more outs over 115 plus games, to account for over a run per game just to be an AVERAGE shortstop. In other words, that extra .11 outs that he gets per game has to save his team a run per game to be average, which is highly unrealistic. AGon is a below average NL shortstop. And that is not even comparing him to the AL shortstops who generally hit better. 522137 Wow...you actually wasted 20 minutes of your life to write a load of crap? :thumbdown If you really think about it, all those runs he "doesn't produce", he makes up for saving them. Stop it with your stupid stats and your stupid "he sucks because he can't make a homerun everytime he comes to the plate". His defense is just sick, so don't even talk about him being a "below average" shortstop. And please don't reply with a whole paragraph full of crap that no one really cares about.

August 23, 200421 yr Alex is still developing as a hitter. When he learns some plate discipline he'll be a top flight SS.
