August 22, 200421 yr Alex is a shortstop. Now in the NL that means all glove and little bat. I will take Alex simply because he is the best defensive shortstop out there. He is consistently better than anyone including Edgar because he doesn't let the bat affect his defense.

August 22, 200421 yr The thing about Alex is he has the ability to be a pretty good hitter.......if only he would consistently show some discipline at the plate. When he shows discipline, and he does this for weeks at a time, his BA can be better than .300. He just wastes so many ABs, and wastes them at critical times in the game. It's all mental with him. He probably has more ugly ABs than anyone else on the team.

You know, ESPN has a spot on scouting report on him: Gonzalez is a low-average hitter who is capable of hitting for power when he gets something to pull, especially a fastball on the inner half of the plate. It's a wonder he ever gets one, considering his oft-demonstrated willingness to chase breaking balls off the outside corner. He's a reactive hitter, and doesn't look to drive the ball on hitters' counts. August 22, 200421 yr overall, i really like this guy, but lately he's been having errors and just doesnt seem confident at the plate.. he needs a few games on the bench to get him angry and motivated again...

He would hit like .050 if they did. 522027[/snapback] There are only two pitches you need to get Alex out. Breaking balls away and high fast balls. No reason to put any of them in the strike zone. You need to throw a first pitch strike to get him behind in the count, and no reason to throw another strike after that. He will take himself out of the AB most of the time.

Hes VERY streaky...when he's on, he'll hit anything, and when he's off, he just kinda looks bad....its who he is. But fortunatley for us, he's not like that on D. In my opnion, he's the best overall athelete on our team. He's got power, a super strong arm, great refelxes and some speed, not terribly fast but overall a good baserunner. Plus, without gonzalez, we probably wouldnt have won a world championship. Remember a GW home run in the WS? Or an amazing play at the plate in game six? yeah...

One of these years Alex is going to figure it out and have a break out year at the plate. Next year perhaps? I wouldn't trade his glove for anything. Not only does he have tremendous range and a strong arm, he makes smart plays in the field as well.

August 22, 200421 yr It's love/hate with Alex, he be the clutchest of all hitters sometimes then look like the worst baseball player in the league at others. I'll take his numbers although I would like to see a better OBP, but that's not going to happen. In comparison to other shortstops around the NL he is pretty high up there so I'll take that. I agree though he is a very frustrating player
