Chipper names son after Shea

ATLANTA -- Although New York fans don't really like Chipper Jones, the veteran Braves third baseman has come to enjoy Shea Stadium enough that he was willing to name his third son after the old structure that rests in Flushing.

 

After the Braves' 7-6 comeback victory over the Giants on Monday afternoon, Jones proudly stood at his locker and proclaimed that his wife, Sharon, had delivered Shea Logan Jones into the world just a few hours earlier, at 11 a.m. ET.

 

"It was a good day topped off by an awesome win," Jones said. "I can go back to Momma and the baby, happy."

 

But that name? Are you serious that you named your son after a stadium in which you've been vilified throughout your career? "I love playing there," said Jones of the place in which he's jeeringly referred to as "La-REEE."

 

"Check the numbers."

 

Jones hit his first Major League homer at Shea Stadium and has batted .344 (169-for-492) with 32 home runs and 95 RBIs during his career there.

 

"I just like the name," Jones said. "We were going to name [the baby] Shea, regardless of the gender."

 

Jones left Atlanta's Northside Hospital in time to arrive at Turner Field during the fifth inning. He struck out during a seventh-inning pinch-hit appearance.

 

After the game, he was going to spend a few more hours visiting and then board his private charter to join his teammates in Philadelphia late Monday night.

 

"It feels great to be a father again," Jones said. "He's got all 10 fingers, 10 toes and has a head of hair like Burt Reynolds does when he has the toupee on."
