Castillo and Seabass: Gold glove tandem?

Notes: Gold Glove tandem?

Castillo wants to win award in same year as Gonzalez

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

MIAMI -- Managers and coaches across the league have been filling out their Gold Glove Award ballots.

In the eyes of the Marlins' staff, there is not a better defensive middle infield combination than shortstop Alex Gonzalez and second baseman Luis Castillo.

Voting rules, however, prevent teams from voting for their own players.

So if any Marlins win Gold Gloves it will be based on how their opposition feels.

Castillo is regarded as the best bet to win the top defensive award for second basemen. That's because he is the incumbent.

The Marlins' staff feels Gonzalez is hands-down the best defensive shortstop in the game. But because his offensive numbers aren't overwhelming, and he is a relatively low-profile performer, there isn't great optimism that he will take the gold. Frontrunners include Edgar Renteria of the Cardinals and Cesar Izturis of the Dodgers.

Third baseman Mike Lowell also is Gold Glove worthy. While Lowell is deserving, he faces a nearly impossible task because St. Louis' Scott Rolen is considered a lock.

Gold Glove winners are presented after the World Series.

Castillo makes it clear he'd like to win the award again, and hopefully in the same year as Gonzalez.

"That's what I want, to win the Gold Glove the same year as Alex," Castillo said. "That's a goal for me."

Castillo also would like to see a couple of Marlins infielders win out of respect for infield coach Perry Hill, regarded as one of the best in the business.

"It would mean a lot," Castillo said. "[Hill] works a lot, teaching us how to field ground balls, and playing good second base. What I want to do in the big leagues is win a couple of Gold Gloves."

Castillo says his Gold Glove chances a year ago were helped by the fact the Marlins won the World Series. The extra exposure helped.

"The Gold Glove, to me, is almost like the fans picking the All-Star teams," manager Jack McKeon said. "If you get one, you have a great chance to get one again."

Along with Castillo last year, first baseman Derrek Lee also captured his first Gold Glove.

McKeon voted for Lee this year.

"I don't know who is going to beat out Luis," McKeon said.

McKeon acknowledges Gonzalez will have a tough time, noting that Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins also is in the mix.

"I think Gonzo will have a chance," McKeon said, "but just trying to think of the mindset of how people vote."

Some interesting stats...

Castillo

In 137 games...

371 Assists, 6 Errors, 89 Double Plays (.990 Fielding Percentage)

Seabass

In 146 games...

390 Assists, 13 Errors, 89 Double Plays (.979 Fielding Percentage)

neither will win it.

To the contrary, I believe both will win the award.

deserving the award, doesn't mean they will win it. I have a feeling they won't win it.
