It's back to Fiedler against Jets

The Dolphins will start Jay Fiedler at quarterback in place of A.J. Feeley for Sunday's game against the visiting New York Jets.

Coach Dave Wannstedt was unavailable to comment Tuesday on why the move was made after saying the previous day that he expected no changes.

But it's believed the decision wasn't based just on Feeley's performance but rather the more experienced Fiedler being a better fit in an offense that enters the game in disarray.

The unit is ranked 31st in the NFL and last overall in rushing with a 47.3-yard average under first-year coordinator Chris Foerster.

The offense's problems include a rash of injuries at tailback and five new starting linemen trying to jell, but the quarterback play of Feeley and Fiedler hasn't helped matters amid the Dolphins' 0-3 start.

Fiedler won the battle with Feeley for the starting spot at the end of preseason after the two had split snaps from the first minicamp in May.

But, throwing two interceptions in the first half of the opener against Tennessee, Fiedler was yanked despite having a 35-17 starting record over four seasons.

Feeley didn't fare much better, throwing five interceptions in the next 10 quarters, including two that were returned for touchdowns. Feeley has needed extensive time to settle into a groove, as 20 of the Dolphins' 23 points have been scored in fourth quarters.

Trailing by 10 Sunday, Feeley led the Dolphins to Pittsburgh's 29-yard line with 4:10 remaining. But he lost a fumble after being blindsided by linebacker Joey Porter, the third time Feeley was sacked in the game.

Asked what the offense needs to get better, Feeley said, "It starts in practice so everyone's on the same page and you can translate it into the game."

But the switch to Fiedler represents even more change for a unit that already will be starting its third tailback against the Jets (2-0).

Leonard Henry will take the place of Lamar Gordon, placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a dislocated left shoulder.

The decision to switch back to Fiedler will raise more questions about the Dolphins' offseason decision to acquire Feeley from Philadelphia for a 2005 second-round draft choice.

They made the trade in March hoping that Feeley was ready to step up from a backup role -- even though he had made only 13 starts since high school, five of which came with the Eagles in 2002.

The Dolphins had also decided to retain the services of Fiedler, who agreed to a restructured contract for $3.7 million this season when told he would be able to compete for the starting spot.

While expressing displeasure about one of Feeley's two interceptions against Pittsburgh, Wannstedt has tried to remain patient considering his inexperience.

"He's young," Wannstedt said Monday of the 27-year-old Feeley. "Every game is a new adventure for him. It's a learning process. And these are not easy teams and easy schemes."

Why we can get the 1st pick in the draft at this point. Pick up a WR with the first pick, or trade down for a couple picks and pick up liek Mike Williams in the top 15 somewhere and pick up a QB and RB in free agency. Chambers, Boston, Williams, Booker; pretty sick starting wide recievers.

Finally Fiedler is back at QB.....Both him and Feeley suck but I rather him play. He gives the team much more confidence in the huddle than AJ does.

So you call that team that played in the first half against tenn confident??whatever....

It was one half!

I saw Feeley do jack s***.He should have 15 INT's instead of 5.I've never seen so many drops INT's in one game(Bengals game).

Do you even watch the games?

Why would we need more recievers??

How about an O- line.

How often do we use 4 WR sets anyway? At any rate, I say we take our likely top 5 draft pick and trade down to get two 1st rounders like a 10-13 and a 21-25. Also trade our high 3rd for a lower 3rd and high 4th. With the first rounders we could get a DT and an OL/RB and with the newly acquired 3rd and 4th we can get a project OL and a WR/QB.

If nothing else makes you think Wanny should be fired, it's the fact that we're discussing the draft with 13 games left in the season.
