Once Hermida starts hitting for power consistently, watch out.

Michael McNutt pitched 1 scoreless inning despite walking 3, and Randy Messenger gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 1 inning of work.

Solar Sox 3, Desert Dogs 3

With the Desert Dogs hitting in the top of the first inning, Jeremy Hermida (FLA) reached on an error with two outs. He ended up scoring on a double by Nick Gorneault (ANA). Two more runs scored in the inning on a home run to right field by Ryan Howard (PHI) to give the Desert Dogs an early 3-0 lead.

Steve Obenchain (OAK) started the game and threw three scoreless innings for the Desert Dogs. Once Obenchain left, the Solar Sox got on the scoreboard for the first time with an opposite field, two-run home run by cleanup hitter Brian Dopirak (CHC). The shot was Dopirak's first of the season and it cut the Desert Dogs' lead to one.

Reid Gorecki's (STL) solo homer tied the game for good after eight innings. In the ninth inning, the Phillies' Chris Roberson took off from first on a 2-0 pitch and was caught stealing to end the inning with the score tied at three. In the bottom of the ninth, Mesa's offense left Geovany Soto (CHC) stranded on base to force extra innings.

In the final two innings both the Desert Dogs and Solar Sox left base runners stranded missing opportunities to capture a win. Mesa's Jonathan Rouwenhorst (ANA) retired the Solar Sox in order to end the game in the bottom of the eleventh tied at 3-3. As an effort to preserve the team’s bullpens, the Arizona Fall League suspends all games that remain tied after 11 innings. The game may be continued at a later time if necessary.

ugh Fulchino

Man, I hope Reed recovers from the wrist thing. Great jobs from Wilson and Hermida!

Reed's gotta be rusty after such a long layoff. He hasn't played since June.

It was an off-day Thursday but we promised you daily updates. Here's an article on the Desert Dogs' home stadium.

http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb..._news&fext=.jsp

PHOENIX -- Phoenix Municipal Stadium returned to the Arizona Fall League on Tuesday after a year-long respite and the Desert Dogs made the return a memorable one with a 5-4 win over the Mesa Solar Sox.

It took 10 innings for the Dogs to put away their stadium mates from 2003, with a passed ball by the Chicago Cubs' Russ Rohlicek scoring Anaheim's Tommy Murphy for the final run of the game.

Municipal Stadium got a much needed facelift in 2003, forcing the Desert Dogs to share Mesa's HoHoKam Park with the Solar Sox last year. The renovations started in April 2003 and finished 10 months later in February 2004, just in time for the Oakland Athletics to open Spring Training at their beloved "Muni."

"They did a great job of completing the renovations in ten months," said James Vujs, the Stadium Director for Municipal Stadium.

The $6.4 million project is most notable as fans approach the stadium from the front, where the entrances have been doubled in size and the box office was pushed back to provide shade to those buying tickets. Considering the sun that shines over the Valley, keeping fans cool was a major consideration.

"We added wore trees and removed the old white concrete -- that blinded people as they walked in -- with a red, grey and black concrete concourse," Vujs said.

A special attraction for fans are the black rectangles centered in the concourse's length. Each rectangle highlights a historical moment for Muni.

A major focus for Phoenix was keeping the historical aspects of the stadium intact while updating the more accessible aspects for the fans.

"The lights poles came from the old Polo Grounds," said Vujs, referring to the long gone New York City stadium the San Francisco Giants played in before their move west. "And Willie Mays hit the first home run at the ballpark in 1964."

Oakland began calling Muni home in 1984 and was greeted by its accordion roof and bleachers. In 2001, blue seats were added around the infield. The renovations allowed for the repositioning of the dugouts, adding 176 seats in the first two rows, as well as giving pitchers such as Arizona's Randy Johnson much needed headroom. At 6-10, the pitcher tended to hit his head.

"Randy Johnson couldn't stand up," Vujs said. "Now we have a Major League sized dugout."

Another noticeable change is on the suite level, where the press box went from a 700-square foot open air point of contact to a roomy 7,000 square foot air conditioned level that wraps around the infield. An elevator was also added for accessibility to two multi-purpose rooms that can be used for parties and a picnic area that sits above the seats on the first-base side above home plate.

The outfield seating was not forgotten, either. The picnic area down the third base line was leveled off for better visibility. Signage for the bleacher sections was raised in bright red above the crowds that usually stand and watch the game from the concourse.

"With the renovations the A's signed a long-term lease," Vujs pointed out.

And there's no reason why the Desert Dogs should have to find another home again.

Hermida aims to prove himself

Marlins want prospect to stay consistent in AFL

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

In his first Arizona Fall League game, top prospect Jeremy Hermida demonstrated some power by belting a two-run homer.

But the main thing the Marlins want Hermida to show them is that he can stay healthy.

Hamstring problems limited the left-handed hitting outfielder to 91 games in Class-A Jupiter this summer. Next year, Hermida will make the jump to Double-A Carolina. As long as he keeps progressing, he's still less 1 1/2 years away from reaching the Major Leagues.

Hermida is one of seven Marlins farmhands playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League. Managing the club is Dean Treanor, Florida's minor league pitching coordinator.

Position players also representing the Marlins in the AFL are infielder Josh Wilson and outfielder Eric Reed, who is on the taxi squad. Pitchers attending are Trevor Hutchinson, Jeff Fulchino, Mike McNutt and Randy Messenger.

Early scouting reports out of Arizona claim that the hitting is ahead of the pitching.

As for the pitchers, the Marlins want them to fine-tune their deliveries, perfect their pitches and basically just get their work done while staying injury-free.

The Marlins first-round pick in 2002, Hermida is a highly-regarded prospect envisioned to eventually become the regular right fielder. The Georgia native has speed, power and a strong arm.

At Jupiter, he finished with a .297 average, belting 10 home runs and driving in 50. He struck out 73 times in 340 at-bats and walked 42 times. Hermida added 17 doubles, a triple and 10 stolen bases.

"What we're looking for from him is to stay healthy," said Marc DelPiano, the Marlins' director of player development. "He missed large parts of the season with a hamstring injury. We want him to stay healthy and work on all aspects of his game. He will be fine if he keeps focusing on all aspects of the game."

When Hermida, who has gap-to-gap power and uses the whole field, gets to Double-A next season, DelPiano says that he will be fine once he catches up to the speed of the game.

"There is a little more athleticism in Double-A," DelPiano said. "The expectations of him shouldn't be a problem. He's made really well. He's a grounded guy. He understands what's expected of him. I don't think anybody put more expectations on him than he does."

Even tho these runs were unearned Messenger has struggled a little bit in his first two outings

By the looks of it, those unearned runs were caused by his own fielding error.

What's worrisome is his K rate. He has one so far after averaging over 1 per inning.

Is it stamina? This is his first year as a reliever.

Desert Dogs 6, Javelinas 4

The Desert Dogs bats came alive in the fifth and sixth innings producing five runs off of six hits on their way to a 6-4 win over the Javelinas. Phillies prospect Ryan Howard and Athletics prospect Omar Quintanilla led the Phoenix offense combining for three hits, three doubles, two RBIs and a run scored.

Peoria got on the board first when Eli Whiteside (BAL) hit a triple over the center fielders head. Seattle infield prospect Michael Morse singled in Whiteside to give the Javelinas a 1-0 lead. The Dogs would counter as Howard belted a double off the left field wall and Nick Gorneault (ANA) reached on a walk. Kansas City prospect Mark Teahan reached on a fielders choice which caused an error that allowed Howard to score from second base.

With a 1-1 tie going into the fifth inning, Corey Keylor (BAL) belted a homer over the right field fence to give the Javelinas a 2-1 lead. The Desert Dogs sent Carlos Ruiz (PHI) to the plate who responded with a leadoff double. Quintanilla advanced Ruiz to third and a Tommy Murphy (ANA) single scored Ruiz. Marlins farmhand Josh Wilson would reach first on a fielders choice that advanced T. Murphy to third. Desert Dogs manager Dean Treanor sent in Kansas City prospect D. Murphy to run for Wilson. Jeremy Hermida (FLA) would drive in T. Murphy and a Howard double followed by an error would score D. Murphy to give Phoenix a lead they would not relinquish.
