'Pavano has Sox on list'

Pavano has Sox on `list'

By Michael Silverman

Wednesday, October 20, 2004

NEW YORK - With this winter's free agent market in its infancy, there's no need to get too excited over the news yesterday that free-agent-to-be Carl Pavano is interested in signing with the Red Sox [stats, schedule].

But the final destination of arguably the best young right-handed starter in this winter's open market bears following once the hot stove season really heats up.

If the Red Sox cannot agree to terms with free-agent-to-be Pedro Martinez [stats, news] and make no significant effort to re-sign Derek Lowe [stats, news], then Pavano may well jump to the top of the Red Sox wish list. Other names would join him on that list - Matt Morris and Matt Clement at the very least - but there is little doubt the Red Sox would seek another ace-material starter to complement Curt Schilling [stats, news] in the rotation.

If and when the Red Sox come calling, Pavano will be receptive.

``We expect to hear from the Red Sox - I'm hoping to hear from the Red Sox,'' Pavano's agent, Scott Shapiro, said from Southern Florida. ``They are one of the teams I believe would be a good fit for Carl.''

Pavano would fit anywhere. It is just a matter of who can afford him, and there is little doubt the Red Sox are one of the potential buyers.

Coming after his impressive postseason with the Marlins a year ago, Pavano put together a strong 2004 campaign, going 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA, pitching 222 1/3 innings. He will turn 29 next year and will be in line for a hefty pay hike from his $3.8 million base salary this season.

With pitching not surprisingly at a premium, there will be teams itching to dig deep for a talent like Pavano's and it does not take a ``CSI'' episode to figure out who has the deepest pockets.

``Carl is not ruling out anyone at this stage,'' Shapiro said. ``I think as logic would have it, that the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets will be the strongest suitors for him.''

Pavano is not exactly coming out of the blue for the Red Sox. As a Sox blue-chip prospect in November 1997, he was shipped off to Montreal along with Tony Armas Jr. in exchange for Martinez.

Battling injuries along the way, Pavano worked his way through the Expos system before being traded to the Marlins in 2002. His career record is 57-58 with a 4.21 ERA.

Pavano was born in New Britain, Conn., and grew up in the Nutmeg State, cheering for the Yankees and idolizing the Red Sox' Roger Clemens, with whom he once hoped to pitch in Boston.

The Clemens part of the equation looks unlikely to happen, but Pavano should be in the position of picking the offer he likes best from any team he wants.

That's why determining just how much he wants to pitch for the Red Sox remains to be seen.

``(The Red Sox) are absolutely on the list,'' Shapiro said. ``Carl grew up in Connecticut and his family is right there. Growing up in New England, he followed the Red Sox. The Red Sox are definitely going to weigh in there as one of Carl's options.

``A lot of factors are going to be weighing in on this. He's a New England guy, and he would be coming home to some extent.''

arg...we traded Penny to have a chance at signing Pavano again....I hope Beinfest puts alot of effort into resigning him...

Meh, I'd be more disappointed if we over pay to keep him than I would be offering him arbitration (which we have to do) and taking the picks when he gets a lot of money for a team thinking they're getting an ace, which Pavano just isn't...he's a very very very very very good #3, but high priced third starters are a luxury, and if we're thinking about cleaning house, we can't afford luxury items.

Benitez is irreplaceable, but Pavano could perhaps be replaced by a solid year from Matt Morris, Matt Clement, Derrek Lowe, Eric Milton, even Al Leiter (if the Mets don't pick up his option, which I think they won't) or (not likely) Pedro...all could be had for less than Pavano because of either age (Leiter) durability (Pedro) or inconsistency (Morris, Clement, Lowe).

I hope Pavano goes to Boston. He would be Derek Lowe V 2.0. I don't think he would be very successful at all there. Wasn't he the starter two years ago in the horrible loss and he didn't get an out in Boston?

yup, 10 runs before getting an out.

If he signed with the Sox it'd give met yet another reason to dislike that crapshoot of an organization...

From Henry, to their idiotic fans that organization should cease to exist.

Pavano didn't give up all ten though

that was a promising article

not one mention of even the possibility of him resiging with us

This is the Boston Herald. The Baltimore Sun is reporting the O's will get him.

The only impartial report has been the NY Daily News rumor section reporting Pavano doesn't want to go to NYC and wants to re-sign with the Marlins.

Well he was drafted by the Redsox, and who wouldnt want to pitch in boston with the great team they have.

He should stay with us though :D

i didn't know that, that's a lil bit more encoraging

I won't miss him for the money he wants. If he accepted our 3-year 21 million dollar offer we're rumored to offer him after the season, I'd be pissed. He's overrated and will flop in Boston or NY.

bitter already?

He did get lucky this year. The defense and park helped a lot. But it's not like we have anyone on the farm who can fill in next year.

Nope. I stated this months ago when most thought we'd resign him. If we're paying anyone 7 million a year after this year, it better be Magglio, Drew, Sosa or Pedro. Pavano was a joke in the playoffs last year and would have been our #4 had Beckett/AJ stayed healthy. People seem to forget Penny was pitching as well as he was most of the year. Someone is going to overpay for Pavano and I hope it isn't us.

I agree with you. I've been saying it for a while, and a lot of other people have to: Pavano is just lucky that his walk year also happened to be a good year. His record makes him look like a better pitcher than he is, and even last year when he had the best statistical season on the team, I had no faith in him, and apparently neither did McKeon by sending him to the bullpen for the start of the playoffs.

I'd love to have him back, but not at a salary that handcuffs us for the rest of the market. Personally, I have a list of six guys: Pavano, Clement, Milwood, Milton, Leiter (if the Mets release him) and Lowe. Whoever signs for the least amount of money over 3 years (or 2 with an option) is the guy I'd like to have.

I agree. However, I'm not sure if I'd give Leiter a 3-year deal with his age.

Also, I'd be shocked if Millwood wasn't a Brave next year.

pavano a joke in the playoffs? ... woah I though he did a heck of a job against the rocket

I guess we were watching the wrong game

If Pavano leaves will you Marlin fans be as bitter to him as you are to Pudge? What about Lowell?

No offense to the question, I just know that a lot of Marlin fans really look down on Pudge for signing a bigger contract elsewhere.

Beckett and Penny carried us in the postseason. Redman and Willis did about as much as Pavano did.

You'll see the Yankees overpay for him and then watch him struggle.

Again, this is nothing from Pavano's mouth. From HIS MOUTH we already know he doesn't want to be a Yankee and what'dya know they talk about him being one. Wait and see what happens.

WOW buddy don't even go there. You want the stats? You got 'em.

POST SEASON-

Josh- 2-2 2.11ERA.

Brad- 3-1 5.73ERA.

CARL- 2-0 1.40ERA

WORLD SERIES-

Josh- 1-1 1.10ERA.

Brad- 2-0 2.19ERA.

CARL- no decision because of the relievers and you better beileve he out-pitched Roger. 1.00ERA.

Did I watch Josh with his 2 hitter against the cubs? Of course. And shutting out the Yankee? Hell yes. Redman and Willis? Dear God they were terrible in the post season and world series. Willis wasn't as bad though. You want to say that Carl was as good as them? No frikin way. He wasn't going to start game 7 for nothing buddy. That statement is just wrong. Bite your tongue.
