ok...

so its ok for television to avoid offending you. Is it ok the other way around? Would you be ok if they didnt allow any overtly religious commercials on their stations because it might offend me?

Is Sexual Orientation a Choice?

No, human beings can not choose to be either gay or straight. Sexual orientation emerges for most people in early adolescence without any prior sexual experience. Although we can choose whether to act on our feelings, psychologists do not consider sexual orientation to be a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.

From the APA. I guess you can choose to say that are non-sensical, but these are the same people who say that video games can increase violence in kids, so you might not want to debunk them.

Can Therapy Change Sexual Orientation?

No. Even though most homosexuals live successful, happy lives, some homosexual or bisexual people may seek to change their sexual orientation through therapy, sometimes pressured by the influence of family members or religious groups to try and do so. The reality is that homosexuality is not an illness. It does not require treatment and is not changeable.

sure it would be ok, if you can generate the consensus for such a thing.

amazing. you might be the most extremely politically correct person ive ever met. really an extreme. all possibly offending material should be removed.

i don't feel is morally right, nor naturally right. i feel that what differentiates us from animals is our ability to control impulses and act rational.

What is rational, or what is right? What the majority thinks. Is it not?

The majority of people used to believe the world was flat, the earth was the center of the universe, etc. That doesn't mean they were right.

Maybe it is us, those who are attracted to the opposite sex who are wrong.

i told you once and i'll repeat it. when you grow up we can have an argument, meanwhile keep your comments to yourself until you are able to reason pragmatically.

i'm not saying that. i'm saying if the consensus goes against my believes and finds them offensive then it would be o to not air my believes.

im not asking about the consensus. Im asking whether you would be ok with it.

And is there evidence that the consensus of people would be offended by a group that accepts gays?

No, you are the one that needs to open your mind a bit. What makes the majority more right than the minority? Just because there is more of them? Why is it more rational for men to be with women and not other men, or the other way around? Just because that is what we see more of? Or that is what people tend to think more of?

People aren't always right, like I pointed out. You just can't take expanding your mind or having a conversation where you have to explain yourself.

most people belong to churches who are not as open to homosexuality. most people are not ok with gay marriages and gay adopting children. i think it is safe to say most people would not have a fair view of a church that accepts homosexuality.

to anwer your original question. i would probably be ticked off by it, but would have to live with it.

you bring a point like the earth being flat which absolutely has nothing to do with the topic and hand and expect to be taken seriously?

It has everything to do with it. Your reasoning behind saying homosexuality is wrong is because the majority says so. Well I am saying the majority isn't always right by citing a few examples. I am sure the idea of citing examples is beyond you, but thats okay, I am expecting of slow witted people anyway.

So once again, what makes the majority more right than the minority? Why is it more rational for men to be with women and not other men?

Because right now you are saying homosexuality is wrong based upon the majority of people and what they think. And what the majority of people think is not fact, and sometime they are wrong. So where is your proof that homosexuality is wrong? I think you will be hard pressed to find it.

maybe because that's the way society dictates it should be? do you ever give any value to tradition, moral values, history? they might not have any value in the academic world of black and white, but in the real world the are slightly more important.

I love how bigots defend their views by claiming that being against gays is having some superior kind of moral values than the rest of the world. These sad, closed-minded, insecure people crack me up.

If everything was decided by "tradition" there would never be any social change in this world. I mean do you believe slavery was right just because it had a long tradition all thoroughout history before it was abolished. Those kinds of arguments don't fly with me. There's always forward progress socially.

I don't see anything wrong with the ad. It's not like they are saying "we let gays get married." They are just saying that they are preaching what Jesus taught, to include everyone.

I am not saying that there is no power to what the majority thinks, but I do think it is wrong for people to blindly believe what the majority of society believes.

There are people out there who believe what they are told to believe and what they are told to believe is generally what the majority believes.

Also, the majority tends to think sometimes that they are right just because, even though they might be wrong, but they never examine themselves, at least thats what I think.

People thought interracial marriages should be illegal years ago. I'm sure over time things will change for gay marriage, just as it did for interracial marriage.

1st of all, quote where i've said i am against gays. you don't even know me, yet you claim i'm a bigot, close minded and insecured. that's right, i'm a bigot.

If you actually want to make history a deciding factor I'd say this hate towards homosexuality is a relatively new phenomenon given that animals, Romans, and Greeks practiced it thousands of years ago. This is more of a recent fad than anything with a historical backing. It's en vogue.

Who else would like the commercial not to be aired? The rational is clear.

That's just their nominal excuse.

Some bean counter in concert with the demographic analysts undoubtedly determined that airing the ad would cost the networks money. If the ad drive some viewers away from the desired timeslots, then the worth of other ads in the same time slots decline respectively with audience.

624851[/snapback]

did you view the add? It's not exactly an overt support for gays. It's for a church, primarily.

http://www.ucc.org/news/u113004a.htm

CLEVELAND -- The CBS and NBC television networks are refusing to run a 30-second television ad from the United Church of Christ because its all-inclusive welcome has been deemed "too controversial."

The ad, part of the denomination's new, broad identity campaign set to begin airing nationwide on Dec. 1, states that -- like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.

According to a written explanation from CBS, the United Church of Christ is being denied network access because its ad implies acceptance of gay and lesbian couples -- among other minority constituencies -- and is, therefore, too "controversial."

"Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations," reads an explanation from CBS, "and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks."

These UCC people are what true Christians should be. Embracing everyone. But, I guess Jesus can only be viewed as a right-wing Republican who hates anyone different from himself.

Shamrock, you seem to think acceptance entails yielding any "rights" that are demanded.

You are wrong.

Believing in "equal rights" is way to vague of a statement. Making such a statement is inviting a lot of trouble and instability into the social and political system.

Didn't they say this when blacks, women, 18 year olds, etc. got the right to vote and received equal rights?

I'm tired of the slippery slope arguments.

This is almost the argument verbatim. Most conservatives used this argument when arguing against blacks and women. "What's next? We goin' to allow the coloreds to vote?"

Progress is important Shamrock, yes. But blindly diving forward in the social progress department is reckless and will have consequences.

(not necesarrily saying this about gay marriage)
