December 6, 200421 yr I agree with Marlins2003 on this one about Berardino, of course. The guy is trying to set up the F.O. to fail. That has been his agenda for a looonngg time. (and Marlins2003, props for using the Stranger in a Strange Land reference - great book.) I think TSwift is right on this one - Leiter is stalling waiting to see if the Mets offer him a deal or if the Yankees contact him. And we are surely his backup plan because we had to sweaten the deal with a promise of broadcasting. That is a good thing for us by the way. As far as the draft picks go, I am of the mind that we should keep as many draft picks as possible. It is our life blood. We cant afford to sign FA's every year and we need to make sure we have a continuous (as much as possible) crop of young talent ready to step in and fill the voids left by departing players. At least, young talent gives us that possibility in addition to being a resource for future trades.
December 6, 200421 yr I can't wait for the day when draft picks can be traded commodities. Being a GM would be even funner.

Being a GM would be even funner. 628294 That is a topic that was supposed to be discussed at some point. Along with incorporating the international draft, I believe. There is enough talent out there that they should have just one draft and allow for the trading of picks. Heck, televise the draft too. On ESPN2. Better than World Series Poker...right Cape?
December 6, 200421 yr I don't want to rush this, but if the Yanks snatch him I'll be pulling my hair out. And they can most certainly outbid the Marlins for Leiter. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but aren't the Marlins getting another 1st round pick from somewhere anyway? 628070 San Fran, and Minny (not sure on that one). 628087 We're not getting anything from the Giants, Cleveland is getting the Giants' first round pick because they signed Omar Vizquel before Benitez. Also, I don't believe we're getting anything from the Twinkies, Redmond isn't a type A free agent.

Also, I don't believe we're getting anything from the Twinkies, Redmond isn't a type A free agent. 628317 That is incorrect. We know have the 22nd pick from the Giants. Here is the answer from Baseball America: The chronology of the transactions doesn't matter. The Giants signed Omar Vizquel 16 days before they grabbed Armando Benitez. Both are Type A free agents, with Benitez (85.478) outranking Vizquel (66.234). So the Marlins wind up with San Francisco's first-rounder (No. 22 overall) and the Indians got bumped down to the Giants' second-rounder. Florida and Cleveland also receive supplemental first-round choices. Link
December 6, 200421 yr ESPNEWS was saying that Leiter is still mulling the offers from us and the Mets but that we have the better offer at "about $6mil" mmmmm $6mil

And Omar being signed first is irrelevent, Benitez is a higher ranked Free Agent.
December 7, 200421 yr I respect Berardino (sorry, Marlins2003), but in this case I think he may be wrong. It's not worth losing a pick when A) it's an one-year deal, B) there are players equal to Leiter's value once you remove the broadcasting side of things, and C) the club should be adding another type A or B player. Don't underestimate the value of a top draft pick. Under Loria/Samson/Beinfest, Scott Olsen (6), Travis Chick (14) and speedster Eric Reed (9) have been the only players drafted past the 4th round to do anything.

That's another steal for a non-first round pick.

December 7, 200421 yr Vargas was a second-rounder, I think, maybe a consolation pick, I forget. He should be good, and I like the change in direction for the Marlins this year by drafting college pitchers. He's still a top draft pick, and I'm waiting for Beinfest and the scouting department to get a real steal late.

I am pretty sure Vargas was a second rounder. He reminds me of Bartolo Colon. And I, too, like the philosophy of the draft. We need to draft college pitchers because they are 1) physically more mature 2) means they will spend less time in the minors 3) means it will cost the Marlins less money to see a finished product. Less risk overall and a better sampling size to evaluate the talent, too. Then again, this is why I stated we should try and offer arby to everyone we can in order to get as many draft picks as possible. That way, we arent losing players for nothing and we can always use a chance to draft talent. Not to mention, you are taking that ability away from another team.
