December 7, 200421 yr I need any input I can get. I am at a big crossroads here and am looking for any advice. Thanks in advance.
December 7, 200421 yr Get the ones that the gov't pays the intrest on while you're in school, for sure. I think those are subsidized.
December 7, 200421 yr they suck but are necessary most times. waht you wanna know? there are subsidized and unsubsidized ones.
December 7, 200421 yr Author I didn't before I left my home. But I might now. I'm reapplying tommorrow. Das, what I wanted to know was essentially what you posted. I figured they suck, but if I need it, I need it. So I should go through FAFSA and not my bank?
December 7, 200421 yr If you signed up for FASFA take everything out through them you can and if you still need then go through the bank. /Loves his free ride through UF //Gooooo Bright Futures
December 7, 200421 yr Author Thanks for the advice peeps, I'm really terrible at all the paperwork and BS involved in this whole process. Any more advice always welcome.
December 7, 200421 yr banks suck for loans. avoid them at all costs on the student side. if the gummit will foot the bill for a while....dew it. but just take all you need...unless you are into 'gambling' with that money
December 7, 200421 yr Author Alrighty Das, I'll take that path (attempt to at the least) Thanks very much dude Advice keeps me cool headed at this tumultuous point in my life
December 7, 200421 yr Gov't loans are as good as it gets. I just made my first loan payment yesterday. $150 down, $17,000 to go.
December 7, 200421 yr The best loans going are Subsidized Stafford Loans. These loans accrue no interest while you are in school. Your first payment isn?t due until 6 months after you graduate. That is when the interest starts. Typically, the interest on that loan is very close to the prime rate ? this pretty much spanks any rate you would ever get from a bank because banks make money by charging above the prime rate and borrowing [cd?s, savings accounts, etc] below the prime rate. Also, do yourself a favor and do NOT check the box for work-study. Work study is a complete farce and a way to enslave students in menial jobs for below minimum wage while robbing them of additional monies. Your work study projected salary is deducted from the amount of money you qualify for in student loans! Then, you get to work at a library desk or washing dishes in a kitchen for $4.50 an hour. Forget it. Get a job at the mall before you are willing to do that nonsense.

Thanks very much, dude. :thumbup
December 7, 200421 yr No problemo. I now work as a researcher at the University I once attended - so I am still "in the know." Let me know when you are ready for the secrets of Grad School... :cheers BTW - have you chosen a major?
December 7, 200421 yr That's crazy. I moved UP to $5 /hour when I was tutoring at the Writers Institute and that money was all taxed. I've never heard of work-study not being taxed - unless you don't report it to Uncle Sam... :confused

So I get my easy money and live happily. I provide tech support for the school's computer network which is easy work. I answer the phones and usually just transfer them to an admin. :cool
December 7, 200421 yr Nah I only work part time, and only during the school year so I don't make more than 4,750 a year anyway and thats the cut off for having to file taxes on earnable wages.
December 7, 200421 yr Gotcha. I was in the Army Reserves (making my 45 cents an hour), in work study (spending more on Jolt and twinkies trying to stay awake than I was making), and also worked at a computer store - which indirectly lead to the position I'm in right now. I had to file all four years and work study was the worst.

Let me know when you are ready for the secrets of Grad School... :cheers BTW - have you chosen a major? 629024[/snapback] I'm still in junior college so I don't have an official one. I want to major in history though
