As we get closer to the season, the Marlins are taking their sweet time in making this deal. All three bidders are still in this race: WQAM, 790 ESPN Radio, and Clear Channel South Florida.

 

Rumor has it that Clear Channel has offered the Marlins to be on 940 WINZ and one of their FM stations (Zeta 94.9 :whistle which could be changed to the Real Radio format like WTKS-FM in Orlando or the twins in Palm Beach/Treasure Coast) like the Braves are going to do in Atlanta with 640 WGST and 96 Rock.

 

790 has offered some good chances for the Marlins to promote, but their weakness is they own no other media properties and are relatively new in the market.

 

WQAM is the incumbent, but the team is pissed off at the way they get treated by the station. The team is also unhappy with the unstable morning lineup of Howard Stern and Neil Rogers which have had advertisers dropping them for "safer" shows like Hank Goldberg (or Glodberg :lol ) and Eddie Kaplan. WQAM may not be able to afford the Marlins due to the cost of recent fines, the cost of Stern staying, the cost of Stern leaving, what the Dolphins may demand, what the station may have to pay incoming talent, and the fact that Power 96 and 99-9 Kiss Country haven't been doing well either.

Clear Channel is also heavily bidding for the Washington Nationals. Seems to be a company-wide effort in the East to capture most baseball rights.

Oh, and the money amount being talked about is $3-5 million.

This is the last post using contacts. Company policies change and such....but all 3 are actively in this. All want the team BAD.

Marlins have become a force to be reckoned with in sports business. #1 reason is Samson. He has brought advertiser and corporate support to an all-time high and it only keeps rising.
