December 8, 200421 yr [Going.. Going... ] The Yankees have found a new leadoff man, signing free-agent second baseman Tony Womack to a two-year contract, Sporting News has learned. Womack, 35, revived his career with the Cardinals last season, posting a .349 on-base percentage and stealing 26 bases in 31 attempts. His addition should enable Derek Jeter to remain in the No. 2 spot full-time ? Jeter shared the leadoff spot at times last season with Kenny Lofton, whom the Yankees recently traded to the Phillies. The Yankees had been expected to re-sign free-agent second baseman Miguel Cairo, but turned to Womack after those talks stalled. [GONE] Didnt really want Tmac back anyways.. Hello Mr. Polanco!
December 8, 200421 yr Yanks finally have a solid leadoff hitter who can be in the lineup every day, unlike Lofton who had to share duty with Bernie Williams.
December 8, 200421 yr The real upgrade is that over Cairo at 2B...but he is obviously much more of a true leadoff hitter than the various guys they've tried there the last few years.
December 8, 200421 yr Author Trust me.. He's a little better player than Miguel but not by much.. Womack had a fluke year this past year.. Anyone stupid enough to think he'll do it again is either a Yankees fan, in a fantasy world, or just cant see anything.
December 8, 200421 yr I'm not sure that Womack is definately an improvement over Cairo - even though he couldn't even nail down a permanent position with pressure from Enrique Wilson - of all people. I know that he is definately an increase in age - something the Yankees do NOT need. A career .274 hitter at lead off? Not ideal. Guess this means the Yankees won't be signing Nomar to play 2B. And I was so looking forward to having 3 of the 4 best SS's in baseball on one team... [sigh]

December 8, 200421 yr Cairo was one of the best performers for the Yankees in this year's post season.
December 8, 200421 yr This is a horrible signing, but don't take them out of the Soriano sweepstakes yet...remember, they did pretty much the same thing with Lofton last year.
December 9, 200421 yr Cairo was one of the best performers for the Yankees in this year's post season. 629940[/snapback] That's probably why they couldn't close out the Red Sox.
