Debates Round 1 Matchup 2

Featured Replies

Here's how it goes. Each side makes their opening argument. One side goes first. Once the other side goes, the first side may post again and defend his argument. You can only go again once the opposing side gets to speak. You've got 48 hours.

ONLY the competitors of this specific debate, the judges and myself may post in this thread.

At the end the judges will privately vote on a winner.

This debate ends 9:00 PM Eastern on 12/17.

Topic: Marlins moving to Las Vegas

Why the Marlins will move to Las Vegas - Maverick

Why the Marlins will not move to Las Vegas - WildMarlinMan2003

Either side may begin.

Debators, please make sure to keep sarcasm and personal battles out of your arguments. Using correct spelling and conventions also wins you brownie points as it makes scoring much easier. Thank You!

:mischief Notice the rest of the sentence. Don't use sarcasm to create personal battles. Sarcasm when used properly will score you big points with me Juanky, just tread lightly. :thumbup

Tip: MAKE YOUR ARGUMENT STAND OUT PLEASE!

Assume all judges have ADHD.

Edit: Also explain all jargon and other terminology that we may not know exactly.

OK, Ill go first. The Florida Marlins(soon to be the LV High Rollers/Mobsters/Blackjacks/Carribean Studs/Dice/Playing Cards) need to get up and move to Sin City. South Florida has an awful fan base and the only sport they care about is football(which I remind you hasnt won in 30 years). No one shows up to games, this after they win a World Series. They need to move to a place where the city will treat them how they deserve to be treated. The team has been around for about 12 years and they have 2 titles. Do the fans care? No. Just the group of about 5,000 diehards deserve to have this franchise stay in South Florida.

Las Vegas would be the perfect place to move the franchise. The city is growing every year, and they currently have population of about 1.6 million. It seems like much more because of the fact that over 37 million people visit Las Vegas every year. Projections show that Las Vegas should have a base population around 3 million within the next 15 years. There already is a stadium in place and even though it only holds a little over 9,000 officials are looking for ways to either expand it or possibly build another stadium nearby. And all the seats will be purchased in the new stadium. Whatever isnt bought by the Las Vegasins(people living in LV of course), the casinos will be sure to buy. They can give it to tourists as part of packaged deals as well as giving them to the high rollers(not the team, the actual high rollers of the casino).

I'd reccomend sexual favors quite frankly. All these boys think with one thing... their nipples.

For the record, the word is debater NOT debator :brigginbounce

I'll start out by saying...baseball CAN thrive here(Miami) under the right circumstances. I will tell you why... We all know that Miami fans aren't the best, but the question is Las Vegas any better? I think not. The only thing Las Vegas has is money- not fans. At games, there will be all tourists. The problem with Miami is that we need a new ballpark. Wayne Huizenga (our former owner) royally screwed us and he is still reaping the benefits from a terrible stadium contract.

Here is a startling fact for everyone...in 1993 (the Marlins 1st season) the average attendance per game was 37,838* people.

Here are other years attendance figures:

1996- It declined slowly to 21,565

1997 (Our championship year)- 29,190 *

2002- 10,038

2003- 16,290

2004- 22,091

*- ABOVE THE MLB AVERAGE

Now, obviously Florida's attendance figures have been very inconsistant (going up and down over the years), but averaging 29-30 K per game is pretty good and I believe Miami can average that (see above-1993 and 1997). Jeffrey Loria (our current owner) has been here for 2 years and has 2 winning seasons. Since his arrival, our attendance per game is shot up from 10 K to 22 K in 3 seasons! Now why would the Marlins go anywhere if their attendance continues to increase and their owner is dedicated to winning? :whistle

Miami needs the Marlins (if you don't believe me then look at the history of the Dolphins and Heat). Miami will not be dumb and let their best franchise (in terms of championships) get away. With all of the Dominicans and Hispanics in Miami, baseballs popularity around here will continue to grow, and with a new stadium so will the Marlins! Our attendance has been on the rise and the Marlins will stay in South Florida.
