I believe the Fish need another bat just as bad as bullpen help.I hope the Fish end up acquiring both needs.

I think Loop was best suited for a set up role. If they are willing to foot the bill for this move, then do it.

If they can get another bat as minus mentioned, make it so.

Actually our pitching is thinned out with the loss of those 2 south americans...and all know there is basically nothing at AAA.

Has anyone else noticed a huge difference in the way Gammons reports on the Marlins? He was the ultimate hater last season after John Henry (lousy piece of $hizzle) bought Mr. Gammons favorite team but since Loria did an interview with him a few weeks back there has been nothing but backtracking, denial, and sunshine being spread by the master of the Diamond Notes. I really liked when Ravich had Gammons backpeddling faster then Ali over the Lowell rumors Peter had been spreading lol

Benitez makes me very nervous. He choked big time on a game against the Yankees where he blew a good lead and walked 3 mans.

 

I'm nervous about this trade.

Everyone chokes occasionally - even the best. I think Benitez is one of the best that are available to us, and would help our staff. Either him or Urbina would suit us well. I'm sure the management is thinking this through as thoroughly as possible! We'll see what happens, if anything even happens.

Jul. 10 - The Florida Marlins are the latest team to enter the bidding for the Mets' embattled reliever, but the $3.5 million remaining on Benitez's 2003 salary appears to be the sticking point. Florida is reluctant to take on that much, and New York is reluctant to eat it after already eating Roberto Alomar's contract.

 

The New York Daily News cites reports that say the Marlins are willing to part with such players as righthanded pitchers Justin Wayne, Blaine Neal and Nate Bump and Double-A lefthander Ryan Snare.

 

Previous reports have had the Yankees, Padres, Giants and Red Sox eyeing Benitez.

The Mets have spoken with the Marlins about a trade involving Armando Benitez, a major-league executive confirmed yesterday, but the sticking point in any deal remains Benitez's hefty salary for the rest of this season.

 

Florida general manager Admin Beinfest told reporters in Chicago that he is searching for a righthanded reliever, preferably to set up closer Braden Looper, but he would not specify the players discussed. Ideally, the Mets would like the Marlins, or another club, to pick up a large portion of the $3.5 million that Benitez is due the next 2? months.

 

It is more likely, however, that interim GM Jim Duquette will pick up the tab and hope that his trading partner will accept reimbursement in January, saving him additional money against the luxury tax this year.

CHICAGO - The Marlins are scouring the market for a right-handed set-up reliever to bolster their shaky bullpen but haven't pinpointed any one player to fill that role.

 

While sources said the Marlins have contacted the Mets about acquiring closer Armando Ben?tez, one unnamed Mets official told a New York reporter Wednesday that ''there's nothing imminent with the Marlins'' and that the Marlins are among a handful of teams that have asked about the pitcher.

 

Said Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest: ``If there is one specific area we're looking at, it's in right-handed relief. We want to fortify that area and [add a set-up reliever]to get to [closer] Braden Looper. We're talking to all kinds of teams.''

 

Even though he has blown six of 27 save opportunities and been subjected to heavy criticism, Ben?tez will serve as the Mets' lone representative at Tuesday's All-Star Game.

 

Ben?tez is still owed about $3.5 million this year and sources said the Mets could be willing to pay that amount, with a stipulation. The Mets would want the team that acquires Ben?tez to pay his remaining salary and be reimbursed by them after Jan. 1.

 

This much has become increasingly apparent: The Marlins feel they are in a position to make a run for a wild-card playoff spot and are prepared to reinforce their roster as the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline approaches.

 

''I think there's a lot of cause for optimism here,'' Beinfest said. ``It feels like we're on the come instead of going the other way.''

 

Beinfest said owner Jeffrey Loria is ''open-minded'' about making improvements but had not been approached by the front office about splurging on late-season help.

 

''We're not at that point where we'd go to him,'' Beinfest said.

 

In the meantime, manager Jack McKeon is showing increased confidence in rookie Nate Bump as a set-up reliever while the Marlins wait for Tim Spooneybarger (sprained right elbow ligament) to come off the disabled list.

 

''Somewhere along the line you've got to take a chance,'' McKeon said of using Bump, who relieved Dontrelle Willis on Tuesday and picked up the win. ``We're trying to find one [right-handed set-up reliever].

 

``If we make a trade to get one, great. If not, we'll try to find one in our own organization.'

Reports have also said that the Marlins have dangled righthanded pitchers Justin Wayne, Blaine Neal and Bump and minor-league lefthander Ryan Snare, who is 5-4 with a 3.67 ERA at Double-A Carolina.

 

Marlins GM Admin Beinfest would not acknowledge specific talks, but told Florida reporters: "The one area we're looking at right now is a righthanded reliever. We're talking to all kinds of teams."
