CardsJimEdmonds15
Cards and LaRussa agree on 3 yr. deal The Cardinals intend to carry "The Load" for another three years. The club is expected to announce next week a three-year agreement that will keep manager Tony La Russa in place through the 2007 season, when he will rank as the third-winningest skipper in the game's history. The deal is the longest signed by La Russa since being named Cardinals manager in October 1995 and would put him second to Red Schoendienst for the longest stay in the position should he serve its complete term. Terms of the contract weren't revealed; however, it is thought La Russa will earn escalating salaries between $2.5 million and $3 million during its term. Craig
Awesome for the Red Birds. Actually, at this time last year, a lot of Cardinal fans weren't happy with LaRussa at all, but last year ended all of that talk.
CardsJimEdmonds15
Hey there's tons of times I cuss at La Russa for his stupid moves (Simontacchi playing LF last year, Marlon Anderson/Hector Luna in the OF aswell) and so on but he knows his baseball.. One of the best managers of all-time. Welcome back TLR!
CardsJimEdmonds15
La Russa's Deal Nearly Done; GM Jocketty contract in Works By Matthew Leach / MLB.com Tony La Russa currently ranks sixth on the all-time wins list for managers with 2,114, and with 81 wins he will move into third. (Donald Miralle/Getty Images) ST. LOUIS -- Not that there has been much doubt, but published reports indicate that Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has agreed to terms with the team on a new three-year contract. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the pact will pay La Russa between $2.5 and $3 million per year. Reached by phone in California, La Russa would not confirm that a deal was done, but said that he was "getting close." He said that there has never been any doubt as to whether a deal would get done; the question has simply been the terms of the contract. La Russa said soon after the 2004 season ended that he intended to return to the Cards for a 10th season. General manager Walt Jocketty, who is also working without a contract, said on Thursday that new deals for both men were "getting close."
