Cubs to sign Burnitz to replace Sammy

The Sammy Sosa deal is expected to become official as soon as tomorrow. When it does, the Cubs will announce the signing of free agent outfielder Jeromy Burnitz.

Burnitz will receive a one-year, $5 million contract with a mutual option for 2006 that could raise the total value to $11.5 million. However, the Burnitz signing is contingent on the Sosa trade going through without a hitch.

Burnitz, who is taking a physical Wednesday in Phoenix, had 37 home runs and 110 RBI for the Colorado Rockies in 2004.

But there are some worries that Burnitz's success may be overly tied to playing his home games at Coors Field; his on-base/slugging percentage was 1.057 at home last season and .775 on the road.

Apparently Beane is still interested, as are the D-Backs.

Since when did Oakland have the money to swallow that contract?

The Mets would be taking one of their problem contracts (I believe it was Chad Bradford) back along with whoever the centerpiece is.

It isnt going to happen.

BTW, the Mets do not have a workout set up, they are just mulling over the idea.

I think this puts more pressure on the Tigers to get the wheels going on this thing though.
