If you noticed there was a comment from Jack after the Mecir signing that after the signing of all the vets in the bullpen this offseason he will not have to "overuse" pitchers this season. This comment was very telling imo. It also tells you why it was smart to sign mecir so we can take our time with spooney. May 1 should be the target.

:thumbup I caught that McKeon comment too and that it was a good insight into Jack's thinking (and perhaps rethinking of his own performance in 2004). Obviously he was unhappy with the options he had out of the pen last season and they ways he was forced to use them. Guys like Perisho, and Mecir, if used in the right situations against the right type of hitters, can be as close to automatic outs as they come.

I'm looking forward to is seeing what Howard, Bump and Wayne do in spring training. "Potential" doesn't mean much this season, it's time to put up or shut up. The guys who were on the 25 man roster last season have to know they are fighting for their MLB lives and they don't "own" their roster spots. The new guys aren't going to lay down, certainly not Bentz and Castillo (Hagerty who knows), and there will be pressure from the Messengers and Hutchinsons.

I would not want to be a relief pitcher on the cusp coming into this season's spring training.

This is good news. Mckeon's biggest problem is that he doesnt like to put in guys that wil lhurt the teams chances, so he will overuse the pitchers that can perform well. Now he will hopefully have more guys to go to that can help us win
