Today's Scum-Sentinel article on Mecir states that Spooneybarger will most likely start the season off in the minors. Sounds like an excellent idea...let him get back into the swing of things in Triple AAA...less pressure, less initial demand on his arm. He can be called up as the season progresses. Another nice move by the Marlins.

Can't have enough pitching! Right RFerry?

Cheapshot...rferry didn't have this info to go on when he made his comments and I'm sure they would've been different with all the information. ass.

Tim Spooneybarger, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, said he felt no pain Tuesday when he threw off a mound for the first time since September.

Florida's acquisitions have pushed Spooneybarger down the depth chart, but he still has the potential to be the team's best reliever. He should win a roster spot if he shows he's healthy.

Theres still ST to see how he is, I think that will decide where he starts off the season in 2005.

Ouch...he didn't need this info. The point remains that you can NEVER have enough pitching.

Damn Ramp...you're good. It was Slaphands...my bad.

The point still remains the same however.

How 'bout Pierre Pierce getting the boot?

How the Hoosiers looking lately?

Agreed.

Am i missing something?

I thought Rferry's contention was we had too much relief pitching.

Not sure...I disagree vehemently with RFerry. He was against the Mecir signing. I thought it was another solid move by the Marlins. A team can never have too much pitching. The piece on Spooney in the Sun-Sentinel supports my contention.

If you have 12 Allstar pitchers and you sign another clsoer for 14M is that too much pitching?

Who would actually pick Mecir over Spooneybarger?

Spooney is better suited getting in shape mopping up games with the Marlins than the Coors Fields of the Pacific Coast League.

if he can't pitch and prove himself, then he shouldn't be in the majors.

huh?

Is there anyone else here who doesnt think spoony will be effective this year? He has missed 1.5 seasons, and now will start in the minors. Why should we expect him to be good?

There's been many pitchers who have recovered from his injury. In fact, it has been linked to increased velocity and recent training activities have brought control back faster than before.

I've never even seen Spooney pitch yet.. :(

I will tho...

Me.

At least I'm not willing to bet the ranch on it.

Many pitchers have come back from this surgery and performed BETTER than they did before. At the same time, many have not. Until spring training roles around and we know how well he's recuperating you can't fault the FO for loading up the relief corps.

Perhaps he'll be ready for opening day, perhaps mid-season ala AJ, but life goes on for the franchise with or without him. Personally I hope comes back and soon but with TJ you never know.

I agree with 2003. To me the biggest problem Spoony will have is his HEART.

He wants back in so badly he will have to be monitored carefully to bring the arm around correctly. Anyway, it will be great just to see him in Jupiter.

Theres really no reason why spooner shouldnt be ready after a year and a half since his surgery. He had the surgery about 3 months after AJ had his. Sure you never know with these things, theres always setbacks and what not, but spooney's advantage is he isnt a starter so you dont have to worry about throwing 100 pitches. He comes in pitches 20 pitches at worst in an inning and hes out. Down side is a reliever doesnt get 4 days b/w appearances. If i'm the marlins ill give him enough action in the spring to get his arm going. See how hes progressed, but theres no reason why he wont come back throwign well, tommy john unlike the roatator cuff surgery is usuaully pretty successful.

If you noticed there was a comment from Jack after the Mecir signing that after the signing of all the vets in the bullpen this offseason he will not have to "overuse" pitchers this season. This comment was very telling imo. It also tells you why it was smart to sign mecir so we can take our time with spooney. May 1 should be the target.

dont rush spooney back if we dont have to

i think starting off in the minors would mean less pressure on him and his arm, and hed be much fresher when we get to the stretch run
