Could the Marlins make a move for Johan Santana

Featured Replies

First off there is no rumor of the Twins trying to move(right now) and the Marlins to my knowledge haven't contacted the Twins...Now the Twins have offer Santana a 2/19mil contract for this CY winner. His agents wants 4/42mil. Now with Conine, and Encaracion off the books after next season a total of close to 7mil. So there will be some space b/c neither will be back at those salaries after next season.

Would the Twins trade there best pitcher, if he doesn't sign by the begin of the season? maybe

What could the Marlins offer? everybody anybody down on the farm expect Hermida

Could the Marlins come close to that 4/42 mil? if the stadium gets done...maybe

Bottomline is there going to need an Ace b/c Burnett will not be back after next season and Santana would perfect fit

Opinions?

First off guys its not way off, The Marlins sign Leiter for 8mil, they went after Hudson with intention of resigning him for big money. Zito rumors are there. Its NOT to much of a dream, if the Twins are willing. Of course the Twins must first feel they have no hope to resign him.

Encarancion will NOT be back after next season and Conine might retire. Hermida hopefeully will be ready by the 2006 season of course

The Marlins are going to be rid of encanation, done with Ivan and Hamptons Contract,Conine might retire and burnett might leave along with lieters 8 mill that frees over 30 mill

:hat :drool

Marlins are gonig to make big moves in 2006 and maybe some trades on 2005

Santana can single handidly put Minnesota in the playoffs. They should keep him anyways.

I like the idea, but only thing is Twins would need somebody to imediately replace Santana...Maybe an AJ/Santana trade with maybe Stokes attached along would be interesting deal. Of course this would have to assume that he definitely signs with us which is no guarentee.

**edit Twins would probably want pitching instead of Stokes...I was just throwing his name out there

You have to subtract the salary we are paying Delgado in 2006... it's like $12 or $13 million, right? So that leaves around $18 million. Assuming Hermida is ready to take over in 2006, then we have $18 million to replace Leiter and possibly AJ. I wouldn't be opposed to doing a trade and sign deal with the Twins and sign Johan to a 4/$42 million backloaded contract. He would really thrive in South Florida. If we pay him $8 million in 2006, we still have $10 million to resign AJ. Or, if not, we can just get two quality starters for $6 million and $4 million respectively and have a rotation of Santana, Beckett, D-Train, $6 million dollar pitcher, and $4million dollar pitcher. That's a heck of a rotation. Or, Santana, AJ, Beckett, D-Train, and cheap 5th starter. That would be hot.

Yeah, we really f--ed up in trading Santana. If we had kept him, we'd have the best rotation in the majors... AJ, Santana, Beckett, D-Train, and Leiter. (Although maybe we wouldn't have gone after Leiter in this case).

Leiter will also be gone next season, from the field that is, he'll still be in the booth :thumbup .

If we're going to go 4/$42, that would keep AJ.

I don't understand why people are so quick to push him out the door...he's going to have a hard time turning down a 3/4 year deal in S.T. when he's yet to put together two consecutive stellar seasons...and it's not like the very real risk of re-injuring the elbow isn't there. If we make an offer in the $8 mil a season range for 3 years, I would have a hard time understanding the logic for refusing such a deal...I mean, his agent would have a real hard time turning it down too, and that counts for a whole lot.

So why would we give him 4/42 if he's yet to put together two consecutive stellar seasons? You mean to tell me a pitcher who's career best was 12-9 and 3.30 ERA should be getting 4/42? You've got to be kidding me. LOL :thumbdown

You misunderstood, I was saying that if we've got this kind of money to throw at pitching, why not simply keep our own?

Not that I wouldn't love to have Santana, but why give up the farm for a guy who isn't that much better than a healthy Burnett or Beckett...not to mention Scott Olsen reminds a lot of people of a Santana kind of player, and we'd undoubtedly have to part with him.

I'm not saying give AJ all $42 million, but I don't understand the logic that he's (AJ) gone, yet we have that kind of money to spend. I don't buy into the whole personal vendetta against the F.O. theory, he's like any other ballplayer, a good offer will keep him...

It isnt much of a dream, but I dont see the incentive at this time for the Twins to move Santana. And if they do, they will get some big time prospects in return...and I am afraid other teams need pitching more than we do and probably have better players to offer.

Resigning Burnett should be the first priority. I believe Pierre will also be a free agent.

WHAT?? :banghead IF he is Some teams might go 5,6 years on him He has to choose th Marlins
